Once a mascara tube dries up, there aren't a whole lot of things you can do with it. Some people use the wand as an eyebrow brush, to tame flyaways, and even clean around hard to reach spots around the house, but now it has a surprisingly new role. Old mascara wands can help animals in need in an unexpected way!

Savannah Trantham, co-founder of Appalachian Wildlife Refuge, shared a post on Facebook to inform people about the usefulness of the makeup tool for furry animals. "Did you know something as simple as an old mascara wand can help wildlife?!? We use mascara brushes to help remove fly eggs and larvae from the fur of animals. They work great because the bristles are so close together," she wrote in the caption.

<amp-facebook data-href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=718373278068&set=a.565202932668.1073741825.103700958&type=3" layout="responsive" height="600" width="640"></amp-facebook>

The post, which resonated well with animal lovers and beauty junkies, has since gone viral with over 59,000 shares and 13,000 likes. The nonprofit organization followed up with a press release thanking supporters for their donations. "We are stunned at the outpouring of support," said Kimberly Brewster, co-founder and outreach coordinator, "I was brought to tears by the messages thanking us for saving wild animals."

If you have old mascara wands in your cosmetics bag, Trantham encourages you to clean them with hot soapy water and send them to:

Appalachian Wildlife Refuge

P.O.
