Kathie Lee Gifford is most well-known for her antics on Today as well as Live! With Regis and Kathie Lee.
Gifford is not just a talk show host, though. She is an actress, a writer, and a Broadway performer. In 1983, she met sports commentator Frank Gifford whom she would go on to marry in 1986. The couple stayed together until his death in 2015.
Together, Kathie Lee and Frank had two kids: a son, Cody and a daughter, Cassidy.
But despite her kids' academic success, with Cody getting straight A's at USC film school, Kathie Lee says she will never tell her kids she's proud of them, even though she is.
Instead, she created her own word.
"We don't say "˜proud' in our family, we never have," Gifford says. "Cassidy was still home and she said, "˜Mom, why aren't you saying something? Aren't you proud of him?' And I remember saying, "˜Cass, pride comes before the fall. A good book says that.' "
That good book she's referring to is the Bible.
"She goes, "˜So Mom, we need a God word for proud,' " continued Gifford. "So I thought about it and said, "˜Okay, Cass, let's make "groud," meaning "grateful to God for every good thing that's happening in your life, but totally aware that you could screw it up at any moment because you're just human.""
The sentiment is interesting, as reminding your kids failure could be imminent might make them paranoid, but it seems to be working for the 63-year-old mom. Gifford has nothing but love for her kids, especially after the death of her husband.
"They're both great human beings who realized that their mama needs them now more than they need me. They come home a lot, and it means the world to me," she says. "When your children ultimately become your dear friends, you know you've made a switch in the relationship."
