Have you ever wondered what types of foods were popular throughout the ages? The trends of today like unicorn-everything, rainbow foods, and uber-sweet treats definitely were not all the rage in prior decades like the 50s or 60s.
We took the time to dig up some famous recipes from generations past and give them a try in a Vintage Recipe Taste Test - would you be adventurous enough to do the same? How did our taste testers do going up against foods like Ham & Bananas Hollandaise or Perfection Salad? Did their taste buds survive?! Read on and watch the taste test below to find out!
Perfection Salad
The name of this recipe doesn't do it justice - I mean, how this "salad" could be considered perfection is beyond us. These jello-encased veggies are ready to add some shock factor to your next get-together!
Ham & Bananas Hollandaise
This recipe came from McCall's Great American Recipe Card Collection of 1973, and we're not so sure that it should have ever been made again. This sweet and savory combination takes things to a new level with ham, mustard, bananas, and hollandaise sauce, all thrown into the oven for a baked breakfast from a very, very weird time.
Bologna Cake
If you like bologna, this "cake" is for you. This one is definitely better than the previous two, and actually tastes pretty good with some crackers. Serve this conversation starter at your next vintage-themed party!
Watergate Salad
Watergate Salad is probably one of the most well-known recipes from decades past. The origin is hard to pinpoint, and was published back in the 70s as "Pistachio Pineapple Delight." We've heard that the Watergate Salad was thought up by a sous chef at the Watergate Hotel, and then took off in popularity during and after the same-named presidential scandal, though this name-change is unconfirmed.
