On December 18, a publicist for the beloved TV and film pioneer Penny Marshall confirmed that she passed away peacefully on Monday night.
The actress, comedian, and director died at her Hollywood Hills home at the age of 75 following complications related to diabetes.
Marshall, who had her breakthrough playing Laverne DaFazio in the hit series Laverne & Shirley, had a record-breaking career that spanned decades.
Famous for directing box-office hits such as A League of Their Own, Big, and Awakenings, Marshall made history as the first woman to ever direct a film that grossed more than $100 million dollars. She was also only the second woman director to have her film Oscar-nominated for best picture.
As one of the most successful directors to ever work in Hollywood, Marshall has crossed paths with many of the entertainment industry's most famous stars, and following the news of her death, they took to social media to pay their respects.
Marshall's ex-husband, Rob Reiner, led the tributes by remembering the love they shared and her natural gift for comedy.
"I loved Penny," he wrote on Twitter. "I grew up with her. She was born with a great gift. She was born with a funnybone and the instinct of how to use it. I was very lucky to have lived with her and her funnybone. I will miss her."
Tom Hanks, who starred in Big, also recalled the times he laughed with the director.
"Goodbye, Penny. Man, did we laugh a lot! Wish we still could. Love you. Hanx," he wrote.
Rosie O'Donnell, one of the stars of A League of Their Own, posted a clip of a K-Mart commercial she and Marshall appeared in together, and wrote that she is "simply heartbroken."
O'Donnell's co-star Geena Davis released a statement in which she mourned the loss of Marshall and thanked the director for letting her be a part of the 1992 film.
"I'm terribly sad to hear the news about Penny passing. My heart goes out to Tracy Reiner and her family. Penny brought so much joy to so many and will be sorely missed. I will be forever grateful to her for letting me be a part of A League of Their Own,"
Several of Marshall's Happy Days cast mates had some heartfelt messages to share too.
"Penny was as courageous as she was talented, and broke down the wall for women directors. Penny will be missed, but her talent and inspiration is evergreen," Anson Williams, who portrayed Potsie on the show, said in a statement.
Dozens more of the industry's biggest names, including Mark Whalberg, Olivia Munn, Danny Devito, Ron Howard, Ava DuVernay, Viola Davis, and Russell Crowe, remembered Marshall's legacy on social media.
