Don't: Fence anyone in with furniture. No one wants to feel like they have to do gymnastics just to get around your furniture and sit down.
Do: Create a clear path from the front door to the sitting area, so your guests can sit down easily. The standard suggestion is 30 inches of walk-through space between pieces of furniture.
Don't: Leave anyone out of the conversation in your living space.
Do: Ensure all furniture is facing each other in a way that is easy for conversation to be had throughout the room.
Don't: Make it hard for guests to put down drinks.
Do: Have a table in arms length of every seat so your guests don't have to be holding their drinks all night.
Don't: Feel pressured to have your sofa up against a wall.
Do: Have furniture away from doors or windows to keep things airy. If the couch feels too out of place, consider having a rug underneath all furniture to tie it all together.
Don't: Block hallways.
Do: Move any furniture away from hallways to create a path between them, to avoid directly blocking them.
Don't: Point your furniture away from a focal point of the room.
Do: Angle all furniture towards a focal point, such as, a window or painting.
