Women across the globe will be celebrating International Women's Day on March 8th. This year however, things are going to be done a little differently thanks to the Women's March movement.
Inspired by the unity, love and liberation of the Women's March, women and allies around the world will partake in 'A Day Without A Woman' strike to show the patriarchy that women are valuable members of society.
As outlined on the movement's website, the purpose of the mass strike is to recognize "the enormous value that women of all backgrounds add to our socio-economic system--while receiving lower wages and experiencing greater inequities, vulnerability to discrimination, sexual harassment, and job insecurity. We recognize that trans and gender nonconforming people face heightened levels of discrimination, social oppression and political targeting. We believe in gender justice."
Partaking in this strike doesn't necessarily mean you'll have to be physically present at a demonstration. There are at least 3 ways you can be in solidarity with your fellow women:
- Women take the day off, from paid and unpaid labor
- Avoid shopping for one day (with exceptions for small, women- and minority-owned businesses).
- Wear RED in solidarity with A Day Without A Woman
The Women's March website is also offering resources such as letter templates for your employer, "Out of the Office" auto response email and more.
Will you be taking part in 'A Day Without A Woman'?
