So what killed Jack Pearson?
Since This Is Us premiered last year this is the question that has been looming on every fan's mind. While it has been teased and hinted about, the mystery has been present since the first episode of the show when audiences across America got completely hooked.
Being a fan of the show can be a rough experience, because not only is it emotionally draining, but it has the ability to make you laugh and feel good about life, even during hard times.
While we wipe away tears at breakthrough moments for each of the characters, we still continue to grieve for the father-of-three who had his life cut too short.
But who does have the answer?
From the get-go Milo Ventimiglia knew Jack's true fate and he enjoys catching all the speculation and fan theories that go along with it.
Fans have been speculating how Jack Pearson dies since the beginning, but last night's episode may have finally laid to rest the answer.
Kate's fear of flying led many fans to believe that Jack died in a plane crash. Kevin can also be seen throwing away one of his toy airplanes, which further reinforces this theory.
Some also believe that Jack's struggle with alcoholism could be one of the reasons he died. After getting behind the wheel after having several drinks at the bar, fans were on the edge of their seat thinking this is how the character meets his demise.
Later scenes show the family's home being badly burned by a house fire and that caused fans to start seeing flames.
While he won't confirm or deny these theories, Ventimiglia said the truth is coming soon, and last night's episode was a major giveaway.
"I imagine that this one is going to hurt," Ventimiglia told US Weekly. "It's definitely going to hurt. In the short amount of time, people have really grown to love Jack. And Jack and Rebecca and the family and the kids, the adult big 3."
"And I think this is just one of those moments where you know it's on its way. And it's going to sting. It's going to hurt. But I think ultimately, hopefully, people can accept and hold the memory of Jack with a full heart and move that into their lives."
At the beginning of the episode "That'll Be The Day" we see an elderly couple cleaning out their garage. We don't know who these people are or how they end up playing a role in the events that will change the Pearson lives forever.
After one of Jack's favorite days of the year, the Superbowl, he cleans up the kitchen after everyone has gone to bed, turning off the crockpot "Off" that was previously set to "Low" in the kitchen.
That's when a flashback of the elderly man from the beginning, named George, shows him coming to the Pearson house just after they moved in with a crock-pot as a housewarming gift. The ominous scene makes you question the operation quality of the slow cooker when George assures Jack that it was still usable. "You have to fiddle with the switch a little," George advised.
Before we knew it, the crock pot turns itself back on and catches fire which quickly spreads throughout the kitchen.
The next episode will ironically air after the Super Bowl and promises to pick up right where the final scenes left off.
Last week we were left with the idea a fire played a big part in Jack's death when it was indicated that the fire detectors needed new batteries and they forgot to buy some from the store.
Creator Dan Fogelman knows we aren't ready to see Jack die yet, but will be happy when the mystery has finally been resolved.
"I know. It's a lot (but you wanted to know!). We have the world's best fans. Thank you guys for caring. I'm sorry if you're crying. I blame @MiloVentimiglia for being so spectacular. #ThisIsUs," he posted to Twitter.
