One of the hardest parts of being a pet owner is learning to carry on after a pet dies. Andrew and his dad Peter were dealing with the loss of their family's 19-year-old dog when a new family member stumbled into their life.

The two men had been feeding some stray cats that lived in their neighborhood. They named the friendliest one Lil Grey, and during the cold Toronto winter they were happy to see that she was putting on some weight after visiting them.

Then, Andrew left the garage door open one night and made a surprising discovery the next day.

<amp-youtube height="9" width="16" layout="responsive" data-videoid="SrNH3--4jrs"></amp-youtube>

It turns out Lil Grey was putting on weight because she was eating for 4! She had her three babies in the family's old sleeping bag, and against all odds the whole family is healthy and fine.

<amp-img src="https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/03/1223.jpg" title="" alt="" height="9" width="16" layout="responsive"></amp-img>
The Gritty Kitties

The family have decided to foster the kittens until they're old enough to be spayed, neutered and adopted. They're even documenting their journey on YouTube and Facebook.

Of course, making a stray cat feel welcome in a new home is a challenge. Andrew and Peter have had a lot of fun showing Lil Grey how to use the litter box.

<amp-youtube height="9" width="16" layout="responsive" data-videoid="QcFQ7Qun-Ew"></amp-youtube>

These two are still trying to come up with names for the kittens (there's a boy and 2 girls) so if you have any suggestions be sure to let them know.

This story just goes to show that when one door closes, another one opens. While they'll always miss their dog, Peter and Andrew have 4 new pets to look after.

Share this post with someone who loves cats!
