When you think of Alzheimer's, most people think of people in the later stages of life. Your grandma, your grandpa, your elderly mother.

But for Pam and Chris Andrews, when they think of Alzheimer's, they think of their six-year-old daughter Belle and 2-year-old daughter Abby.

Both girls were diagnosed with Niemann-Pick disease type C1, a rare and fatal genetic disorder that is referred to as 'childhood Alzheimer's.' The disease will eventually cause both girls to lose their ability to think, hear, walk, and talk. Most children who are diagnosed don't live for more than 10 years.

<amp-img src="https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/02/childhood-alzheimers1.jpg" srcset="https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/02/childhood-alzheimers1_GH_content_550px.jpg 550w, https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/02/childhood-alzheimers1_GH_content_650px.jpg 650w, https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/02/childhood-alzheimers1_GH_content_750px.jpg 750w, https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/02/childhood-alzheimers1_GH_content_850px.jpg 850w, https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/02/childhood-alzheimers1_GH_content_950px.jpg 950w, https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/02/childhood-alzheimers1_GH_content_1050px.jpg 1050w, https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/02/childhood-alzheimers1_GH_content_1150px.jpg 1150w, https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/02/childhood-alzheimers1_GH_content_1250px.jpg 1250w, https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/02/childhood-alzheimers1_GH_content_1350px.jpg 1350w, https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/02/childhood-alzheimers1_GH_content_1450px.jpg 1450w, https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/02/childhood-alzheimers1_GH_content_1550px.jpg 1550w, https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/02/childhood-alzheimers1_GH_content_1630px.jpg 1630w" sizes="89vw" title="" alt="" height="9" width="16" layout="responsive"></amp-img>
PEOPLE.com

Chris Andrews first noticed something was wrong in Belle when she was at a gymnastics competition.

"One time, between breaks, she came back and couldn't do what the other kids could do, that was something that told me something's not right here."

Only 600 kids in the world have this disorder, which is carried through genetics.
