The Church of Scientology has been one of the most controversial religions since it came to popularity. There are a lot of reports of bizarre behavior and even attempts to discredit it by former members.
Now, the church is under fire because one of their own have been accused of sexual assault, and it is reported that the church tried to cover it up.
Actor and Scientologist Danny Masterson, known for play Hyde on "That '70's Show" is currently under investigation for the sexual assault of three woman in the early 2000's.
The LAPD released a statement saying that "the Los Angeles Police Department Robber Homicide Division, Sexual Assault Section, is conducting an investigation involving the actor Danny Masterson. Three woman have come forward and disclosed that they were sexually assaulted by Masterson during the early 2000s."
The women involved were also Scientologists and claim that the organization was pressuring them not to come forward and contact the police.
Masterson's representation has denied the allegations on his behalf, stating that "based on reading the anti-Scientology blog that posted this store, these false allegations appear to be motivated to boost Leah Remini's anti-Scientology television series since [the victims] only came forward after connecting with Leah Remini."
Leah Remini had famously left the church after 30 years as a member. Her series "Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath" gave an inside look into what the church actually does. One of the victims had confided in her after the release of the show and Remini felt they deserved to be heard.
She said, "I met with the LAPD. I met with Detective Reyes, and I told her these victims deserved to be heard. I pointed out to her that there was a framed picture of a Scientologist on their wall, actor Michael Pena. Do you know what that says to a young Scientologist who comes here to seek justice?"
No charges have been filed yet, but the investigation is under way.
