For most people with tattoos, their body ink is the ultimate form of self-expression.
Whether you just want a single tattoo or a collection of them, they will stay on your body for the rest of your life, so you should be certain of your decision to undergo the needle - or it may just come back to haunt you.
However, some consequences can be more devastating than others, which can change your life forever.
One teenager from central Colombia's Casanare Department experienced a tragic outcome after she decided to get a tattoo.
"I had a miscarriage and lost the son I was carrying."
After Luisa Fernanda Buitrago, 16, got her right breast tattooed, she fell ill from an infection, causing her to suffer from a miscarriage, and to make matters worse, her doctors informed her she would never be able to walk again as the infection had spread into her spinal cord.
"As I had to take a lot of medicine, I had a miscarriage and lost the son I was carrying," Fernanda Buitrago said.
"A year ago I had a tattoo done and it caused the bacteria that affected the spinal cord and stopped me from walking again."
Things went from bad to worse when she underwent surgery to have the liquid caused by the infection drained from her body, only for it to create problems with her appendix.
"I was ashamed of being seen outside on the street."
Following Fernanda Buitrago's heartbreaking ordeal, she's taken to social media to warn others about the dangers and risks that can come with getting tattoos.
"It was hard when I was told by the surgeons that I would not able to walk again. My mum supported me a lot," she shared.
"And it was hard when I left hospital because I needed help to get in and out of my wheelchair and my mum is not strong enough."
"I was ashamed of being seen outside on the street, because people would point at me, but later I realized it was not good to stay at home all the time."
Fernanda Buitrago said she's been informed she will need to undergo another operation to improve her health.
However, her rehabilitation is costly, and her friends are helping her raise the needed $4,600 for her treatment.
