Petition Demands Stricter Penalties For Disobeying School Bus Lights And Sign

Something that will always make my blood boil is when people refuse to respect the rules of the road, especially in school zones and around school buses. How hard is it to slow down or stop so that children can safely cross the road? There is nothing, NOTHING, worth risking the lives of children for.

Sadly, 100 children every year are killed in collisions walking to and from school. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 1,300 people were killed in school transportation-related accidents between the years of 2006 and 2015.

This year, three siblings were struck and killed as they crossed the road to get on their school bus. Six-year-old twin brothers Xzavier and Mason Ingle and their 9-year-old sister, Alivia Stahl, died at the scene. They were all holding hands when they died, and Alivia had tried to shield her brothers from the oncoming truck.

The driver was speeding, and flew right past the bus's flashing lights and stop sign. There were no signs that she tried to slow down at all.

Drivers are required to stop at the flashing red warning lights on buses, but the penalty is not severe enough, at least in the minds of the people who created on online petition demanding harsher laws on stopping for buses.

The petition, which lives on WhiteHouse.gov, is calling for congress to enforce legislation which would hand out extreme punishments to those who broke it.

Children are being injured or killed due to people running the alternating reds on school busses. individual state laws are largely ineffective and typically have no significant penalty.

We call upon our President and Congress to act by signing legislation that will keep our children safe by instituting severe penalties on ppl who choose to violate the red lights on a bus such as 30 days in jail, 90 day dl suspension, 12 points on license and a mandatory minimum fine of $5000.00 for the first offense.

This is the least we the American voters will accept.

The petition currently has 5,306 signatures out of its 100,000 signature goal. It needs to reach the 100,000 signature mark in order to get a response from the White House.

Currently, each state has its own law which dictates the punishments for running the bus stop sign, but having federal legislation and repercussions could ultimately make people more wary about breaking the law.

I know I would feel safer for the kids in my neighborhood if people began following the laws, so I will be signing this petition. Will you?
