The most common side to sleep on is the right, and that's because it just feels right!
Well, what if I tell you that the right side may be the wrong side? Will you start to train yourself to sleep on your left?
According to health experts, there are some positions that are doing you more harm than good. For example sleeping, face down, like a starfish, on your arm, and in the fetal position are contributing factors to back and neck pain.
Left-side sleeping has numerous benefits. For instance, people who sleep on their left side will not snore as loudly as they would in other sleeping positions! For anyone who has spent a night awake listening to someone snore, you'll be grateful for this tidbit of information.
Here are five more health benefits that will improve your quality of sleep, and the overall quality of your life.
1. Improves Digestion & Reduces Heartburn
Research shows that sleeping on your right side will make your heartburn symptoms worse, while left-side sleeping may relieve it.
Also, gravity will allow food to move more easily from the small intestine into the large intestine, which will help with digestion.
2. Spleen
Switch to the left so that drainage goes back to the spleen, which is located on the left of your body. Gravity is doing all the work for you, all you have to do is change the side you sleep on!
3. Heart
Left-side sleeping will also speed up lymph drainage toward the heart.
4. Lymphatic System
Did you know that the left side of your body is the dominant lymphatic side?
Switch to the left so that your body will have more time to filter all the toxins and lymph fluid that has built up in your body.
5. Circulatory System
If you have varicose veins, sleeping on your left side will improve your circulation. The vena cava, which is your body's largest vein, is located on the right side of your body, so sleeping on the other side will reduce pressure on that vein.
