Love is a funny thing. It can sweep a young couple off their feet, then disappear before their eyes and leave them in an unhappy marriage.
The thing is, for most couples it takes a few years, or even a decade to drift apart. In Hollywood, everything moves a bit faster.
While there are some Hollywood couples who have been together for years, most celebrity romances seem to fizzle out in just a few months.
Even in tinseltown, these short stories of love and loss stand out from the rest: these couples didn't even last a year.
1. Jim Carrey and Lauren Holly - 10 months
The comedian had been dating his Dumb and Dumber costar for years before they finally tied the knot in 1996.
They met just a year after Carrey's divorce from his first wife, and their relationship seemed to be doomed from the start.
Holly revealed the pressure of dating a star like Carrey eventually drove them apart. Apparently, reporters would rifle through their trash and climb over the walls of their property.
2. Tom Green and Drew Barrymore - 5 months
This odd couple met on the set of Barrymore's action movie Charlie's Angels, when she invited Green to film a cameo.
The comedian has since revealed to Oprah that he's not even on speaking terms with his ex-wife anymore.
Her five-month fling with Green wasn't the Hollywood wild child's only short-lived relationship. Barrymore also had a 39-day marriage to an L.A. bartender when she was only 19.
3. Charlie Sheen and Donna Peele - 5 months
The Two and a Half Men actor and his model ex-wife didn't exactly have a timeless love story.
Sheen announced their engagement while testifying in court, during the trial of a notorious Hollywood madam.
While he called his new wife "an angel sent from heaven to take me through the rest of my journey," she flew off after less than a year with Sheen.
"You buy a bad car, it breaks down," Sheen said about the marriage. How charming.
4. Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Esposito - 4 months
The Limitless star and his wife, who you may remember from Blue Bloods, seemed like a perfect match for each other.
But the pair broke up faster than you could say "I do," and struggled to explain what caused their divorce.
As Cooper told Howard Stern, "It was just something that happened. The good thing is, we both realized it... Sometimes you just realize it."
Sometimes you realize it before the wedding, but oh well.
5. Renee Zellweger and Kenny Chesney - 4 months
Are you struggling to picture this actress and country star married to each other? Maybe that's part of why they broke up just months after tying the knot.
The only explanation Zellweger offered for the split was this totally confusing statement:
The miscommunication of the objective of their marriage at the start is the only reason for this annulment.
To make things even more bizarre, Zellweger listed "fraud" as the reason for the divorce, prompting all sorts of rumors about Chesney's behavior.
6. Jennifer Lopez and Cris Judd - 4 months
Just before the pop singer became one half of "Bennifer," Lopez stunned Hollywood with a four-month marriage to one of her backup dancers.
It was Lopez's shortest marriage, but not her first. She had already broken up with Cuban waiter Ojani Noa after less than a year together.
Of course, since then she has also "indefinitely delayed" her marriage to Ben Affleck and divorced her third husband, singer Marc Anthony.
7. Colin Farrell and Amelia Warner - 4 months
Farrell had been dating the English actress for less than a year before they shared a private "wedding" ceremony on a beach in Tahiti.
The Minority Report star later tried to insist jumping the broom with Warner was "by no means legal and we knew it wasn't," but he still has her name tattooed around his ring finger. That sounds pretty official to me.
Farrell explained the relationship simply happened "too fast" and that they were "too young." Judging by how quickly they broke up, he was probably right.
8. Kid Rock and Pamela Anderson - 4 months
We have to give the Baywatch star credit for putting up with the hip hop musician for as long as she did.
The couple dated off and on between 2001 and 2006 before finally eloping to St. Tropez for a beach wedding.
Too bad they split up just months later, reportedly after a heated argument over Anderson's cameo appearance in Borat.
The actress would later beat her own record with a 60-day marriage to poker player Rick Salomon.
9. Nicolas Cage and Lisa Marie Presley - 3 months
Love works in mysterious ways, and that's all we can say about this union between the notoriously weird actor and the King of Rock and Roll's daughter.
Before marrying Cage, Presley had famously married, divorced, and tried to reconcile with pop star Michael Jackson over more than a decade.
So maybe the Ghost Rider star, who famously bought a pyramid shaped tomb for himself, seemed like a regular guy in comparison.
As for Cage's take on the split, "I did not comment on the marriage, I will not comment on the divorce."
10. Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries - 72 days
This reality star's relationship with her basketball player boyfriend seemed perfect on TV, so fans were shocked to learn they had divorced less than three months after their lavish wedding ceremony.
The timing of the split - just two weeks after their two-part wedding special aired - made some suspicious that the entire relationship was an act.
But Kardashian insists she "married for love, I can't believe I even have to defend this."
"I would not have spent so much time on something just for a TV show."
11. Mario Lopez and Ali Landry - 2 weeks
The Saved by the Bell star and the former Miss USA had been dating for six years before they decided to get married.
But Lopez didn't tell his bride-to-be he had been unfaithful just days before their wedding ceremony, with a woman he met at his bachelor party.
In fact, Lopez said he had no plans of admitting his infidelity until a picture of him poolside with another woman surfaced.
"I was wrong for obviously lying, and I shouldn't have been in that position," Lopez said about his mistake. No kidding!
12. Dennis Hopper and Michelle Phillips - 9 days
The legendary Hollywood actor was famous for being both free-spirited and hard to deal with.
Hopper had five marriages in his lifetime. Only one lasted more than a decade and all of them ended in divorce or separation.
His most infamous split was with singer-songwriter Michelle Phillips, who could only deal with Hopper for nine days.
"Seven of those days were pretty good," Hopper told the New York Daily News, "the eighth day was the bad one."
13. Carmen Electra and Dennis Rodman - 6 days
There must have been something in the water on the set of Baywatch, because Electra's marriage was even shorter than her co-star Pamela Anderson's.
She had been courting the Worm for eight months before they said "I do" at an overnight ceremony in Las Vegas.
But less than a week later, the basketball star tried to have the ceremony annulled because he had been out of his senses when he said his vows.
While he withdrew the annulment, the marriage was left on life support, and Electra finally pulled the plug just six months later.
14. Britney Spears and Jason Alexander - 2 days (55 hours)
The pop singer's marriage to her childhood friend lasted just long enough for her to sober up after their quickie Vegas ceremony.
Spears insisted she had "lacked understanding of her actions to the extent that she was incapable of agreeing to marriage."
She would later try marriage one more time, with a two-year union to dancer Kevin Federline that is still causing legal headaches for Spears to this day.
15. Zsa Zsa Gabor and Felipe de Alba - 1 day
There's no denying that Old Hollywood did everything better: they even put today's reality stars to shame with record-setting short marriages!
Gabor married the Mexican actor before discovering that she was still married to Michael O'Hara the next day. Instead of bothering with the paperwork to fix her mistake, Gabor decided to call the whole thing off and annulled the marriage.
Alba was the eighth of Gabor's nine husbands, a list which includes hotel baron Conrad Hilton, actor George Sanders, and Barbie doll designer Jack Ryan.
