Everyone knows that sharks are one of the world's scariest creatures. There are many people (myself included) who could not be convinced to jump into shark-infested water, even if there were safety measures in place.
However, basketball superstar Shaquille "Shaq" O'Neal decided that it would be a good idea to brave to waters and join Discovery Channel's "Shark Week" with his own segment.
It's called "Shaq Does Shark Week" and while it seems like it would be a safe and fun event, it actually got really scary for him.
Discovery sent Shaq into the ocean in a 12-foot-tall enclosure, similar to the ones you've seen many other people use when they go on vacation to "swim with the sharks," except this time something went wrong.
While he was contained in the cage, one of the sharks managed to wiggle its way through the bars, becoming trapped in the enclosure with Shaq. That's right, he was trapped inside a metal cage with a shark.
Before going in the water, Shaq was trying to be brave. "Give me my goggles. I'm going in. I ain't afraid of no shark," Shaq said to his co-star comedian Rob Riggle.
Riggle was a little more apprehensive, but supportive. "You should be a little afraid, but that's okay," he said. "You got this, Shaq. All day - all day."
But it wasn't long into Shaq's time in the cage that something went wrong. Riggle was throwing the chum into the water to lure the sharks in, but as he did one of the smaller sharks got too close, and managed to squeeze through the bars.
One of the divers was heard yelling "There's a shark getting in the cage! There's a shark in the cage! We've got to get him out!"
The divers worked on distracting the shark while Shaq quickly climbed free of the enclosure, and luckily no one was hurt in the incident.
Will Packer was one of the executive producers of Shaq's show, and revealed that they were all pretty shocked when the shark broke through the bars because it has never happened in the 30 year history of Discovery Channel's Shark Week.
Shaq was pretty upbeat as he left the cage though. "I survived a shark attack, you b***es!" He yelled as he exited the water.
So at least Shaq and the crew are safe, but it's scary to know that those cages aren't always as shark-proof as they claim!
Check out the video for yourself, and see just how scary it was.
