Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. may only be 16 months old, but tennis champion Serena Williams is already teaching her daughter the lessons that will help her grow up to be a kind, strong, and confident person.
Williams, who appears on the cover of Allure magazine's "Body + Mind" issue, opened up about how she approaches the issue of beauty as a mother, explaining that she tells Olympia (they call her by her middle name) that ultimate beauty comes from within.
"When I tell her she's beautiful, I want to teach her that she's beautiful from the inside," the 23-time Grand slam winner said. "Giving is beauty. Being kind and humble is the ultimate beauty."
It looks like Williams is doing a stellar job because Olympia is already showing the world that she is a really good sport.
In a recent video posted on Instagram by her father, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, the toddler is filmed cheering for both her mother and aunt as they played against each other in an exhibit match.
"That's a classy baby, you know, she applauds both Mommy and my opponent who happened to be her auntie," Williams told reporters during a press conference after the match. "That was the highlight, seeing her clap, it was so cute."
In her Allure interview, William explained that while she wants her child to treat others nicely, she's hoping that she will still be strong enough to stand up for herself.
"I want her to know that being strong is never easy. Not in this world we are living in," said Williams, whose physical and emotional strength has been tested several times over the years. "Standing up for yourself is not going to be easy, but it's always eventually respected."
The athlete added that it is the people who aren't afraid to speak up and stand up for what's right that have "made a difference in this world," and end up being the ones that we remember the most.
With strong and determined parents like Williams and Ohanian, there is no doubt that Olympia is destined for some big things.
