With the wedding details pouring in about our new favorite celebrity couple, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, it seems like we will soon all be treated to yet another magical royal wedding.
We look forward to these celebrations of pomp and spectacle, and for the beautifully written vows about how the betrothed will carry on loving each other until the end of their lives.
There is a large amount of dignity and gravitas attached to the monarchy when making these vows, because they represent more than an important family for Britain, they are the living embodiment of an entire nation.
As Prince William and Kate have proven that a successful marriage is built on love and trust, we should have no worries about the upcoming nuptials between the playful prince and his celebrity bride-to-be.
However, this isn't the standard that the royal family is used to meeting. For all their so-called respectability, the monarchy has been rocked with affair after scandalous affair for nearly every generation of ruling.
Here are the most shocking revelations about the "tame" and "conservative" rulers of England!
King Edward VII
Son to the prim and proper Queen Victoria, Edward VII famously lost his virginity to a camp prostitute. But that was only the beginning of a sex-fueled lifestyle that rocked the private lives of the British royal family, in a time where a pair of mix-matched socks would be cause for scandal.
At his 1901 coronation, he actually invited several "royal concubines" to sit in the official guest seating areas, which brought a lot of shame to his parents.
Many of his mistresses he had later in his life were from families of note, and among their number is Jennie Churchill, mother to the future war-time Prime Minister, Winston Churchill.
Another was Mrs. Alice Keppel. Not familiar? The great-grandmother of Duchess Camilla of Cornwall, the second wife of Prince Charles. We'll get back to her later...
Prince George, Duke of Kent
His was probably the most scandalous reputation of any of the modern royal family, and he did his best to make it so.
Prince George was the son of King George V, and grandson to the aforementioned King Edward VII. He knew that he was not in line for the throne and so he decided to live a life of excess that included sex, drugs, and a taste for both men and women.
It was an unspoken truth that he took to the company of men in his youth, but it finally caught up with him when he was briefly arrested after being caught engaging in homosexual acts, a crime in that period of time.
After his marriage, he kept up his string of affairs with both men and women, and was even blackmailed several times after sending explicit love letters to many of them.
King Edward VII, Abdicated
The once-king of England had everything going for him in his life. However, like his brother, the Duke of Kent, he was not able to prevent himself from seeking out other women in his life.
However, unlike his brother, Edward believed in the responsibility of his name by managing his role between the people and the monarchy.
Edward had been carrying on a relationship with American divorcee, Wallis Simpson, for some time, and when his feelings became clear, he called a meeting with his Prime Minister.
He declared that if he could not marry his love and remain king, he would voluntarily leave the throne and carry on life as a lesser member of the family in order to share his life with her.
This led to the ascension of Princess Elizabeth to the head of the Church of England, and the nation.
Queen Elizabeth would never be accused of impropriety, however the same cannot be said of her husband.
Prince Philip
In the latest season of the Netflix show The Crown, the issue of Prince Philip's infidelity comes up in a rather overt manner.
The show uses a fictional character to draw attention to the very real connection between the prince and actress Pat Kirkwood.
While she has publicly denied any intimate involvement between herself and Philip, the royal family has never fully explained the situation, leaving her largely undefended.
"A lady is not normally expected to defend her honor. It is the gentleman who should do that," said Kirkwood in a bombshell expose. "I would have had a happier and easier life if Prince Philip, instead of coming uninvited to my dressing room, had gone home to his pregnant wife on the night in question."
Prince Charles
In one of the most stunning tabloid series of the 20th century, the double affair between royal couple Prince Charles and Princess Diana, and their respective extra-marital partners rocked the world when they came to light.
While Diana was tragically lost in a motor vehicle accident, the prince lived on and eventually rekindled his love with the Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla.
Camilla Parker Bowles said she was mortified when the affair was revealed.
"It was horrid. It was a deeply unpleasant time and I wouldn't want to put my worst enemy through it," she said. "I couldn't have survived it without my family."
