If you thought that closing more than 40 stores nationwide earlier this year signaled the end of an era for Sears, things have just gotten much worse for the chain.
As the deadline arrived for a massive debt payment this week, Sears Holdings Corp. filed for bankruptcy.
What does that mean for the average shopper?
Liquidation sales are starting soon at more than 140 Sears and Kmart locations from coast to coast.
And there are still good deals to be found at these stores, if you know how to get them.
Sears Is Shrinking Again
In 2013, Sears had 2,000 locations across America. While it was already past its prime, the historic department store chain was still putting up a good fight.
But increasing pressure from online retailers - and even other big box stores - has pushed Sears to the brink.
The chain has not turned an annual profit since 2010, and has lost $10 billion in the same time period.
After 46 Sears and Kmart store closings were announced this summer, another 142 were listed in the company's bankruptcy announcement, with closing sales set to begin "withing two weeks" at all of those locations while some have already begun.

There will be less than 700 Sears and Kmart locations open after the latest round of closings, which is less than the number of stores Sears Holdings has closed in the last two years alone.
Sears has already shuttered or sold off their locations in other countries, including Canada.
It's unclear how many employees will be affected by the huge number of closings, but Sears Holdings Corp. reportedly had 90,000 employees earlier this year.
How To Get The Best Deal At Closing Sales
While a closing sale at your location may sound like a chance to scoop up some great deals, know that acting fast may not be in your best interest.
In general, the trend at closing sales is that you will not save as much as you expect, and recent store closings like Toys "R" Us proved that rule is still true.
The fact that Sears Holdings is still struggling to pay off its debtors probably means they will want to wring every last penny out of these closing stores.
So how can you make the best of a bad situation? Sadly, you may need to wait until the stores are almost empty.
Just like at a yard sale, prices will drop even further when it's time to pack up and go home. But by then, most of the quality products will probably be gone.
Still, there are some good discounts to be found already.
A staffer for Time MONEY reported that clothes and shoes were discounted by 50% at one closing Sears location.
Tools and home goods had smaller discounts, while big-ticket home appliances were down about 30%.
But those prices are not even on par with savings from a regular Black Friday event, so it could be in your best interest to wait and see before making a big purchase.
Bear in mind that Sears and Kmart offer brands like Craftsman, Kenmore, Levi's, and Timberland. But you may need to rush to the stores before those products are gone.
