Sarah Hyland has always been one to call out others for their rude or insensitive comments. She even left Twitter for a while after she received backlash for asking fans for money after her cousin was killed in a car accident. The Modern Family actress was met with comments about how she makes $100,000 per episode, so why couldn't she help out instead of asking for fans.
"You guys finally did it," she wrote on Twitter. "Your horrible negative ignorant words have broken me. Happy? Staying offline for a while. I have a special announcement and video releasing on Wednesday I believe. So. There's that."
But clearly Hyland only felt that she had to be kind when it worked for her, because after the news of Khloé Kardashian's boyfriend, Tristan Thompson, cheating on her with sister Kylie Jenner's best friend, Jordyn Woods, the actress took the opportunity to bring the attention to herself.
"Seems like Khloe is finally out of the Woods..." she wrote on Twitter. "That was too soon. I apologize."
Of course, it was just a joke, but considering Hyland's previous comments about being kind to others, it was a bad look for her. Fellow Twitter users were quick to point out the error in Hyland's ways.
"Pretty insensitive," one person plainly wrote.
"This is the kind of support we give other women when their hearts are broken, even though we've all been there?" another asked. "That's some sisterhood."
"This is NOT uplifting other women!" one woman tweeted at the star. "You should be ashamed of yourself. I would hope something like this doesn't happen to you."
"No need to make jokes at the expense of another woman's pain for the sake of likes," one user criticized. "Didn't you say online bullying affected you? How is this any better?"
The last user has a point. Hyland spoke to Ellen DeGeneres about how she had contemplated suicide due to her multiple health issues, and also implied that people who criticize her body also played a role in the thoughts.
"I would write letters in my head to loved ones of why I did it and my reasoning behind it, how it was nobody's fault and I didn't want to write it down on paper because I didn't want anyone to find it because that's how serious I was," she said. "I was very, very, very, very close, yeah."Hyland has since deleted the Tweet, and it doesn't appear that she has addressed the controversy that has swirled around her.
In my opinion, the joke was definitely in bad taste, but it wasn't really that bad. What makes it notable is how Hyland has constantly called out other people for their rude or insensitive comments, either towards her or anyone she knows, so to say this about a relationship falling apart is fairly hypocritical.
What do you think of Hyland's comments?
