Politician Quits His Job In Order To Become A Lifeguard

Huffington Post Canada/Acadie Nouvelle

We have all been there. Working a job that, while fulfilling, isn't exactly what we want to do with our lives. Many of us have thought this way at least once in our lives, but few have actually gone through and done something about it.

One Canadian politician decided he had had enough of politics and decided to quit, pack up his life, and move to the Bahamas to become lifeguard.

Jordan Nowlan was just 18 years old when he was elected to the city council in Dieppe, New Brunswick. He wasn't even old enough to drink when he started governing his home city. He has faithfully served his city for the last five-and-a-half years, but he recently decided that he needed a change in his life.

"I absolutely loved being an elected official," said Nowlan from the Bahamas. "But I saw it (lifeguarding) as an opportunity to take a bit of a break from politics to focus on myself and to be able to grow as a person."

New Brunswick is one of Canada's Maritime provinces, and it can be quite cold and snowy through the winter, so it isn't hard to understand why he would want to head to the Bahamas.

The island he will be working as a lifeguard on, Castaway Cay, is a private location that exclusively serves Disney Cruise Line ships as a port.

This isn't a permanent position for Nowlan, and it was a difficult decision to leave what was a great career back in Canada. He said it was easier to make the choice once he had the support of his colleagues on the city council.

"They all supported me in my decision, thinking that it's the opportunity of a lifetime to come and work in the Bahamas for a corporation such as Disney," he said.

Nowlan will return to Canada when his contract is up at the end of December, but he will head back to the Bahamas for his second contract in January. Work will keep him there until the end of May. After that who knows, maybe it's time to head off to college or university?
