The Academy Awards are never without their share of controversy, but even by their normal standards, this year is shaping up to divide people.
The controversies started almost as soon as the Oscars announced their host. Kevin Hart was slated to emcee the 91st Academy Awards, but was soon dumped due to homophobic tweets in his past.
People lined up to express outrage or support for the embattled star, even after he refused to apologize. Rumors eventually swirled about other potential hosts, from Dwayne Johnson to Jimmy Kimmel to even hiring Kevin Hart back.
In the end, the Oscars chose to run without a host for the first time in 30 years.
That hullabaloo might take a back seat to other possible controversies, if the Golden Globes are any indication.
From early on in 2018, A Star Is Born looked like it was going to crown Lady Gaga the undisputed queen of Hollywood. When it was finally released the movie raked in the cash and critical acclaim. The original song "Shallow" topped the charts and no one could get enough of Gaga's performance.
Award season started and Gaga started strong, receiving a Critics' Choice Movie Award for best actress and a Golden Globe nomination. That's where the bloom started to come off the rose.
Gaga lost the award everyone assumed would be hers as Glenn Close took to the stage to accept her newest Best Actress award for her role in The Wife.
Gaga again faces off against Close for the Oscar in the same category, but both will have stiff competition from Olivia Colman (The Favourite), Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), and Yalitza Aparicio (Roma).
The Oscars have a history of snubbing front-runners. McCarthy is a crowd favorite and an off-the-board pick, but Aparicio has garnered tons of praise for Roma. A foreign film that won best director and is the year's most nominated film.
If Gaga doesn't win you can bet it will be one of the most talked about stories of the night.
Bohemian Rhapsody won Best Picture at the Golden Globes and might be poised for a repeat at the Oscars. It's up against BlackKkKlansman, Black Panther, The Favourite, Green Book, Roma, A Star Is Born and Vice.
Since Roma's director, Alfonso Cuaron, won a Golden Globe, and is an Oscar favorite (Gravity, Children of Men, Y tu mama tambien) it's not inconceivable that his newest film will sneak in and nab his first Best Picture win. Roma is also a Netflix movie, becoming the first Best Picture nominee for the streaming giant.
This year there are some notable snubs in the Best Director category too. Bohemian Rhapsody may have won Best Picture, but its director, Bryan Singer wasn't nominated.
That's likely because he was fired from his own movie amid bizarre behavior and sexual assault allegations.
Bradley Cooper, nominated this year for Best Actor (A Star Is Born) was also left off the Best Director list.
Black Panther becomes the first superhero movie nominated for Best Picture. It made billions of dollars and will no doubt be the first pick of young people around the world. With seven nominations it's one of the years most nominated films, but didn't receive any nods in acting or writing categories.
Other Oscar-bait movies that didn't get a nibble, Mary Poppins Returns came up nearly empty as well as First Man the long-awaited Neil Armstrong biopic staring Ryan Gosling.
