Elvis Presley was famous for many reasons. His singing, his acting, his service in the military, they all added to his reputation as The King. Presley's infamous diet also made headlines quite a few times, and even became American favorites.
Mary Jenkins Langston, Elvis' personal chef for 14 years revealed some of The King's favorite foods, and what drove him to eat.
"He said that the only thing in life he got any enjoyment out of was eating," Langston told the BBC. "And he liked his food real rich."
"For breakfast, he'd have homemade biscuits fried in butter, sausage patties, four scrambled eggs and sometimes fried bacon," Langston told the BBC. "I'd bring the tray up to his room, he'd say, 'This is good, Mary.' He'd have butter running down his arms.''
According to Priscilla Presley, her husband's favorite sandwich stemmed from a childhood of poverty.
The fried banana and peanut butter sandwich has become synonymous, being called the Fool's Gold loaf. Since his death, many variations have been produced including some with bacon.
However, the "Fit For A King" cookbook revealed the real recipes behind Presley's favorite recipes, and some of them don't look half bad.
So what, besides that sandwich, did The King like to eat?
Coconut Cake
"It has been said that Elvis was just wild about his Mother's Coconut Cake." -- Fit For A King
County Fair Cookies
These actually sound delicious, and if someone made them for me I wouldn't be upset.
Monkey Bread
"Elvis was always home with his family at Graceland for Christmas. There would be plenty of packages under the huge tree. He served the traditional turkey with stuffing, but for himself, Elvis preferred ham salad, potato salad, meatloaf, and Monkey Bread" -- Fit For A King
BBQ Bologna
Half a stick of bologna and some BBQ sauce, that's all you need.
Tomato Fritters
Tomatoes, cheese, and a deep fryer. Doesn't get much more simple than that.
Favorite Cheeseburger
A good point was raised by a co-worker, who asked at what point does it become separate cheeseburgers...there are 4 buns involved and a full pound of ground beef.
But what was his favorite fried banana and peanut butter sandwich recipe?
The 8,000-calorie sandwich has seen many variations over the years. Bacon or no bacon? Jelly or no jelly? The King himself preferred the totally classic version, probably because it reminded him of his childhood.
