Miranda Lambert Gets Real About Having Her Heart Broken By Blake Shelton

CMT / Disney Channel

Country music has had its fair share of feuding couples, messy breakups, and ugly love triangles.

In recent years, Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert have been involved in all three.

The pair of country stars were once a musical mega-couple, and now they regularly trade insults and snide comments in public.

And in a new interview, Lambert finally came clean about her complicated relationship with Shelton.

Breakup After Breakup

When Shelton first met Lambert, he was already hitched to country singer Kaynette Williams.

It's unclear if Shelton actually had an affair with Lambert, but Williams cited "inappropriate marital conduct" in her divorce papers.

Shelton later admitted that he felt an immediate connection to Lambert while they were performing together.

"I was a married guy, you know? Standing up there and singing with somebody and going, 'Man, this shouldn't be happening,'" he said.

"Looking back on that, I was falling in love with her, right there on stage."

Lambert even admitted she "knew better" than to fool around with a married man like Shelton.

"I had seen their wedding picture in Country Weekly," she explained, "like this is off limits."

But the couple had their own marital troubles, and lasted just five years together after tying the knot in 2011.

He Said, She Said

After the split, both Lambert and Shelton poured their hearts out in their music.

Shelton admitted his song "She's Got a Way With Words," about an unfaithful woman, was inspired by Lambert.

"When you have a broken heart "“ at least, when I do "“ you got to get it out of your system," he told Billboard.

"You want people to sympathize with you. I was at rock bottom, in the middle of hell."

In a new interview with HITS Daily Double, Lambert says her 2016 album The Weight of These Wings was like "therapy" when she was feeling "so alone" after the divorce.

"It's unpleasant for me sometimes to write it down and sing it into my phone," Lambert said.

"'Oh, I hurt myself, you know,' and I'm glad I did because I hope it hurts somebody else too. It lets it out."

But the heartbroken singer also says the breakup taught her to be unapologetic.

"I am who I am. I am honest about being flawed," she said. "That's all I can be, you know?"

"I cuss. I drink. I get divorced and get my heart broken. I break hearts."

New Flames

While Shelton's new relationship to fellow The Voice judge Gwen Stefani attracts a lot of speculation about wedding bells, Lambert has been getting the wrong kind of tabloid attention.

Lambert has been connected to country stars Anderson East and Evan Felker since her split from Shelton.

But Lambert reportedly started dating Felker when she was still dating East, and while Felker was still a married man.

The singer has faced backlash on social media for her choice of romantic partners, but reveals she just brushes off the criticism.

"With social media, it's a whole other thing. And it's such bulls"“t," she explained.

"I'm thankful for the drama of it all because it gets sillier and sillier. ... No one can know the truth. The truth is, it's in my music if you listen close enough."

At least one good thing came out of all this heartbreak. Shelton revealed he and Stefani bonded over their divorces on set, which eventually brought them together.

"It just makes the most perfect sense for us and where we're at in our lives. I tell people all the time, Gwen saved my life last year," Shelton gushed to CMT.

"She did, and I think she would probably tell you something similar about me."
