Before Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher were known as Hollywood's "It" couple, many people tend to forget that the That '70s Show alum was in a romantic relationship with former child star, Macaulay Culkin.
The pair, who got together in 2002, were in a relationship for about eight years before they split up. While the former couple kept their relationship relatively private, Kunis is finally opening up on what went wrong, and revealed the demise of their relationship was her fault.
In an interview on Dax Sherpard's podcast Armchair Expert, Kunis, 34, admitted she it was "a horrible, horrible breakup," adding that she was the one who "f"”"” up."
"I was an a"”"” in my 20s and I'll be the first to admit it. And that's something that took me a long time to come out and be like, 'Yeah, you know what, I was a d"”,' and accept it and I own it now," she told Shepard.
"And it's f"”"” up what I did. It's f"”"” up what I did and it's f"”"” up how I did it. When I got to be single I said, 'I just need to figure myself out.' I genuinely need to know why I did what I did, and, like, regroup myself as a human being," she continued.
When asked if she's forgiven herself for the way she treated Culkin, 37, Kunis said she has, but it took time to happen.
"You know, it's been so long like I feel like enough time has gone by," she explained. "I think enough mutual friends have been like, everybody kind of forgave everybody for what went down."
Although Kunis didn't elaborate on how she wronged Culkin, she did tell Howard Stern in 2016 that his celebrity status was peculiar in comparison to other stars.
"He was huge. You couldn't walk down the street with him," she said at the time.
"He always had this weird attraction, like fans just screamed when they saw him! They didn't know how to react. It wasn't like a normal response to a celebrity. Fans responded in a very abnormal way to him," Kunis continued.
But don't feel too bad for Culkin. He's dated other people since their breakup and is currently in a relationship with former Disney star Brenda Song after meeting her on the set of Changeland.
"I'm with a lady right now and she is like, so good to me that they feel like blows. Like, she just does nice things and I feel like I'm almost like, at first I didn't know how to be treated well in that kind of way," the Home Alone actor said on the Anna Faris is Unqualified podcast.
"It was a strange, almost foreign kind of concept. That kind of thing, that was important to me and now I realized, 'Oh, it is important to me as well,'" he added.
In the same interview, Kunis also discussed her mother's initial reaction to her relationship with Kutcher, 40, and admits she wasn't thrilled.
"We were driving up to Laurel Canyon, and I was like: 'Mom, I have to tell you I'm dating somebody.' And she was like: 'Oh, tell me! Who are you dating?' And I was like: 'You've got to brace yourself for this one. I'm dating Ashton Kutcher.' And she literally was like: 'Shut the f*ck up' in Russian."
"He was coming off of a divorce. He was post, post, post, way post-divorce but I think there was a lot of misconceptions about the divorce," Kunis explained. "We were crazy neurotic about it keeping it a secret, probably to a massive fault where we alienated so many friends, I'm sure."
But, her family eventually warmed up to their son-in-law, and Kunis said in an interview with Cosmopolitan said that while she has ignores the tabloids whenever she's mentioned in the media, her relatives find it more difficult too, especially where the possibility of more grandchildren are concerned.
"The amount of stress that caused my family, nobody will understand. Although my dad is always very hopeful that the pregnancies are true. He's always like, 'Is there really another?'" she said.
It's nice to see that all's well that ends well, and of course, we'd love to see Kunis and Kutcher expand their brood!
