Sometimes you get a ticket and there's really nothing you can do to fight it. Expired meter, no parking zone, in front of a fire hydrant, it's all pretty obviously not allowed. But then sometimes, you just can't believe what's happening!
Nick Taylor of Michigan was shocked when he saw a parking ticket on his car...especially since the car was in his own driveway.
The 24-year-old was letting his car warm up in the driveway before heading to work. Apparently, an officer was passing by and saw the car and decided a citation was necessary. Taylor was hit with a $128 fine for leaving his car unattended with the keys still in the ignition.
"My car takes forever to warm up," Trupiano said of the 1997 Chrysler Concorde. "And I believe the temperature was around 5 degrees outside."
Taylor took to Facebook to express his frustrations about the ticket, and more than 14,000 shared his post.
The posted gained a lot of attention, and now the local police have issued a response.
However, despite the backlash by the public, Roseville Police will not be rescinding the ticket.
"I encourage our officers to write this ticket," Roseville Police Chief James Berlin told CBS Detroit. "All it takes is someone to hop in this car and take off. Then there's a chase often at a high rate of speed and all that could have been prevented."
"So to protect Mr. Trupiano from having his car stolen, they're trying to steal his money instead. This is private property, this is a private vehicle. He's not on a public road he's not at a meter," said Nick Somberg, Taylor's attorney. "What right do the cops have to tell a man he can't try to warm up his car on his own property?"
Somberg is taking on the case pro-bono, saying the officer either has "no heart or no brain."
There is currently a GoFundMe page set up to help get Taylor a remote starter for his car.
