We know Madonna has never been one to stick to conventions, so it's no surprise that that sentiment has rubbed off on her children.
Madonna and her 21-year-old daughter Lourdes Leon, who she had with Cuban actor Carlos Leon, shared a sweet moment on New Year's Eve that has the internet talking.
It seems like just yesterday that Madonna was pregnant with Leon, who was named after the city of healing and miracles.
"At first I was a little bit shocked but then I thought, this is a little bit perfect because I'm getting two things I want more than anything, at the same time," the pop icon shared with Oprah Winfrey in 1997 when she sat down for an interview.
Madonna, who was 38 at the time, couldn't have been more thrilled about her new addition.
"When I look into my daughter's eyes right now, I feel that I'm being healed," Madonna said on Oprah all those years ago. "Because I didn't have a mother that I could grow up looking into the eyes of, I couldn't recognize myself in [my mom], I couldn't see myself in her. So now I look into my daughter's eyes and I see that recognition, and it is so extraordinary, that feeling, and I think that it is going to heal a lot of the pain that I felt growing up without a mother."
Mother's Day in 1996 was bittersweet for her, because she felt her baby girl kick for the first time, which brought joy she had never previously felt on the day.
Years later, in 1998, the "Material Girl" singer admitted that, "I feel like I'm starting my life all over in some ways. My daughter's birth was like a rebirth for me."
Motherhood has given the music icon an eye-opening experience about life.
"My daughter is a daily reminder of the issues I have to work on"”being too consumed with the way I look and what people think of me, feeling insecure, all that stuff," she shared with Oprah in 2004.
It wasn't the celebrity resemblance that had people in an uproar over the mother-daughter photo, but the young woman's choice of how she managed her body hair.
In the image that features the 59-year-old songstress embracing her daughter that has everyone with mixed feelings.
The 21-year-old Lourdes shows off her armpit hair that she apparently has let grow wild and free.
Many cheer the bold mood to opt not to shave.
One fan tweeted, "As long as she uses soap & deodorant it's all good. Women have been forced to shave. By men to fit an image of what they want women to be. ALL women have hair there. We're just not used to seeing it."
Others were not as supportive, saying that the hair takes away from the beauty of the photo.
"Shave it, Braid it, Curl it, or Trim it. Do something! Geez! That armpit hair took the focus away from beauty of the photo!" another person tweeted.
It looks like Lourdes gained the confidence to go all-natural thanks to her mom, who has shown off hairy pits in the past.
In 2011, Madonna explained her beauty decision.
"I saw how popular girls had to behave to get the boys. I knew I couldn't fit into that," Madonna told Harper's Bazaar. "So I decided to do the opposite. I refused to wear makeup, to have a hairstyle. I refused to shave. I had hairy armpits."
Madonna later posted on Instagram that set haters straight.
"Oh Wait! What was my New Years Resolution? 🤡. .......................Oh Yeah......To Give many less F**ks about what people think! #thinkforyourself#dontbeasheep#thecheesestandsalone 👑,"
What do you think of the photo? Are people making too big a deal of it?
