What could have been a living nightmare turned into a perfect sign of fate for a California man.
Three years ago, Nico Bellamy was given an engagement ring by the father of his current girlfriend, to give to her when they decided to get engaged. This ring had belonged to Bellamy's girlfriend's grandmother. Bellamy stored it in a deposit box to ensure it stayed safe, as well as hidden from his girlfriend, Caitie Schlisserman.
When the couple decided to move from West Hollywood to Silver Lake in July 2017, Bellamy retrieved the ring.
Bellamy stated that, he knew was going to propose for awhile so he thought it would be a good time to take the ring out.
He put the ring into a small plastic bag and then placed it back into its box and slid it into his backpack before the move.
Once they got to their new home, he placed his backpack on the ground of his living room and helped the movers bring their furniture inside the house for the rest of the day.
Just a few days after moving in, Bellamy realized he left the ring in his backpack, and went to go retrieve it.
"I went to go get it and noticed my backpack had been unzipped. When I dumped everything out and realized the ring wasn't there, I ran to the bathroom and threw up immediately," says Bellamy. "Not only was it this heirloom that was given to me by her dad to keep safe and I misplaced it, but her father was still recovering from his mother passing away just nine months earlier."
The two were planning to pick her father up from the airport that very day.
After freaking out, Bellamy came to the conclusion that the movers must have stolen it when they were moving their stuff. When he called the moving company, he didn't get a response.
When they arrived at the airport, Bellamy immediately texted Caitie's father saying they needed to talk privately right away. Bellamy told Caitie an excuse and ran in from the car to meet Stuart in the airport, and then broke the news.
Her father told him that they would figure it out, and they left.
On the drive home, Bellamy noticed a posted sign saying "Found Engagement Ring."
When they arrived home he told Caitlin he was going to walk the dog and immediately went to the sign and called the number.
Luckily, and surprisingly, the ring was his!
When he met with the people that found it, they told him they found the ring box in a nearby alleyway"”right where the moving trucks were a week earlier. Bellamy said he is convinced the movers took the box, opened it, saw the crumpled plastic bag but not the ring and then tossed it aside thinking it was empty.
Bellamy kept the story from Caitie until New Year's Eve, when he proposed during their trip to Paris. (She said yes.)
"And the greatest thing now is it's on Catie's hand "” so if it gets lost again it's her fault," Bellamy told People magazine.
Bellamy thought that he would never see the engagement ring again, rightfully so. This is an extreme twist of fate and even sort of a miracle that it was found and returned safely.
