If you had to make a split-second decision to save another person's life, do you think you could make the right choice?
Savannah Pritchett was faced with a life or death choice last week, but police are calling her a "true hero" for her brave decisions.
The gas clerk from Waterford, California's incredible rescue story began when a terrified woman rushed into the Triple R Gas and Mini Mart last week.
"The first thing she told me was: 'I was kidnapped and they have guns.'"
Pritchett remembers that the woman was "very shaky" as she took her hand.
"The first thing she told me was: 'I was kidnapped and they have guns,'" the clerk remembered.
"'Please lock the door. They will kill us or kill me.'"
Thankfully, Pritchett did just what the woman asked, locking the gas station's front door straight away.
"Everything that happened, it was just instinct for me," she told Fox 40. "Like I knew that I had to keep her hidden."
Next, the quick-thinking clerk gave the woman her cell phone, and told her to call 911 while she hid in the store's washroom.
Pritchett locked the bathroom door to protect the woman, and less than a minute later she heard a knock at the station's front door.
"They asked me, you know, 'Why'd you lock the door?'"
Investigators now say the woman who ran to Pritchett for help had been abducted and sexually assaulted by a group of teens the night before.
When her kidnappers stopped for gas, the woman managed to escape their car by saying she needed to use the washroom.
But security camera footage shows a pair of suspects trying to check up on the teen shortly after she hid in the bathroom.
Police later found a gun inside the store, and believe the suspects were armed when they confronted Pritchett.
One even asked the clerk to open the door after claiming that he had cancer and a prosthetic leg.
"They asked me, you know, 'Why'd you lock the door?'" she remembered. "And I told them she told me she started her period."
By now, Stanislaus County Sheriff's deputies were arriving at the station, and one of the men begged Pritchett to hide him from the police.
Deputies stormed the station with gun's drawn, and arrested the suspects.
Deputies call her a "true hero"
Three teens were arrested at the gas station, while another was apprehended later the same day.
Police found guns inside the store and in the suspects' car. They were charged with a number of crimes including kidnapping, sexual assault, and armed robbery.
While the local sheriff's department describes her as a "true hero," Pritchett hopes anyone would do the same thing in her shoes.
In fact, Pritchett says the victim told her two other bystanders drove away after she went to them for help.
"The one thing that keeps replaying in my head is if I wouldn't have believed her, what would have happened to her?" Pritchett asked.
"I'm very thankful that I got to help that girl and I am very thankful that she's home safe with her family and now I'm happy that they got those guys off the street."
We're not afraid to say that Pritchett is a hero!
