Kids say they hate their parents all the time. It's just part of parenthood. For Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, their 18-year-old daughter Lola has constantly told them they're embarrassing, and has also limited their use of her picture on their social media pages. Ripa has often talked about how Lola has to approve any pictures of her that get posted, which is totally fair.
Of course, the love between a parent and child always comes first, but for the Ripa-Consuelos family, they may have some repairing to do after Lola saw...well, let's just say she saw the love between a parent and a parent.
Ripa and Consuelos told the hilarious story on Live! With Kelly and Ryan as Consuelos was a guest host. It was Lola's 18th birthday, and the couple shared an unfortunate encounter they had with their daughter.
"We started her day off pretty bad yesterday," Consuelos started. "She knocked on our door. Well, we thought she knocked on our door..."
"What do you mean you THOUGHT she knocked on our door?" Ripa quipped. "How do you...? Did you...? Are you telling me now that you heard a knock?"
"No no no, I'm just saying that she knocked on our door, on our bedroom door..." Consuelos hinted.
"Timeout!" Ripa exclaimed. "No she didn't!"
"Well she opened the door, is what happened," Consuelos said. "She opened the door and it was late morning...and it was Father's Day."
Both Ripa and Consuelos looked at the audience with clear defeat and embarrassment in their eyes.
"I'm going to be honest: I was not in the mood," she said. "There was a house full of people."
"I could tell," the Riverdale actor said. "You were going through the motions. You were definitely going through the motions."
"I'm sorry!" Ripa interrupted. "My in-laws were waiting to eat. My in-laws were in the kitchen, I know they were hungry, I had a house full of people. Any time there are other people in the house I'm not really...relaxed. You know, and he was like 'but it's Father's Day!' and I was like, alright well that typically doesn't conjure up amorous thoughts but okay."
"So [Lola] opens the door and we see the door open, and we're like 'AH! CLOSE THE DOOR! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?' and she goes 'Thanks a lot! It's my birthday!" Consuelos recalled.
"She shuts the door and you hear, 'You just ruined my birthday! And my life! And I used to see in color and now everything is gray!'" Ripa continued.
"That's verbatim what she said," Consuelos confirmed. "And now we're having Father's Day brunch, and we're sitting there with my father, my sister, and the kids and Lola and she's sitting there looking at us."
"We're sitting there eating and she looks at us and says 'You're disgusting. You guys have no chill! You act like you're 20, but you're not,'" Ripa said. "And now, I'm still trying to talk in code because my father-in-law is at the table and I go, 'with respect, we weren't in the kitchen!'"
"I'm not sure she saw anything," Consuelos said.
"I made eye contact with her!" Ripa chimed in.
"So but then now at the brunch, the other kids, now they all start sharing stories of when they've walked in...does nobody knock in this house?" Consuelos asked.
"Nobody knocks!" Ripa agreed. "Nobody knocks in our house. And Lola's like 'I knocked! You can't hear me because you're deaf from exercise class!' Which may or may not be true."
"So last night [Lola] came back into our room to say goodnight," Consuelos shared. "The door is closed, we were watching TV, and she comes in and [knocks really loud] and I'm like 'Hello?'"
"It was like a fire department knock," Ripa added. "It was like BOOM BOOM BOOM!"
"Oh, poor Lola," Consuelos said.
Even though Ripa and Consuelos are famous, they're not exempt from being "uncool" parents. I'm not sure every other kid has had to have their awkward encounters shared on live, national television!
