If you've been missing your fix of Kate Gosselin on TV, don't worry, she's about to be back. The mom of eight, who rose to fame for her show Jon and Kate Plus 8, has been single since her split from ex-husband Jon, or at least as far we know. Now, she's ready to find love again, and she's ready to find it on TV.
A few months ago, it was announced that Kate a new show, separate from the kids, which will be called Kate Plus Date. The premise is pretty self-explanatory: Kate is set on finding a date. The reality star admits that the show is awkward, but that's just the way television works. She also acknowledges that being on TV is something she's comfortable with, so it kind of made sense.
"This was a journey and it was really neat because in coming up with this saying, "˜Yeah, I'd love to date, you know, on TV, the safety that it provides. I feel comfortable on television,'" she admitted. "The whole thing of it was, I didn't realize how awkward I'd feel and how this whole journey takes place."
Despite it being awkward, Kate is thankful for the experience, saying she learned about herself throughout the whole process.
"I learned so much about myself and so much about how I react to different situations. And it's painful at times," she said of the experience. "I'm hard to watch, exciting, awkward, fun and really rewarding."
When the show was announced, Kate elaborated on why she thought dating on television was more suited to her lifestyle than just meeting someone the normal way.
"If I'm going to date someone, I can't just go out on a date "” it's creepy to me to think of just going out somewhere with some stranger, and so I actually feel like doing it like this is the best and safest way for me to go on a date "” a camera crew will be there! I'll be safe!" she said. "And the person will have been vetted by a matchmaker. I won't be just doing some scary online thing. I mean, online dating, seriously "” I put my profile in there and people will know who it is within 90 seconds. No, this is probably the safest way for me to date, let's be honest."
Kate is also clear on who she wants in a partner, and we all know she's not going to settle.
"I do want someone with a set career, who is confident. A grown-up with their own life, their own agenda, who knows who they are. If someone travels for work, that would be great, because I'm used to being on my own and being self-sufficient, someone who won't suffocate me," she requested.
The timing of the show lines up with her oldest daughters, twins Mady and Cara, heading off to college. Kate said she started pictures herself getting older, and she wanted to do something for herself again.
"[I] started picturing myself sitting in a rocking chair, knitting, and words like "˜old maid' and "˜spinster' started to come to mind, and I realized that no, I don't want that to be my fate," Kate admitted. "I stopped focusing on myself "” I used to be a runner, and all of these things sort of fell by the wayside, and I sort of forgot about the dating thing. It's never really fit into my life."
As for her ex-husband Jon, he doesn't really think this is the way to go.
"I don't think anyone can [find love on TV]," he told Us Weekly. "I think you need to find it [organically]."
