Imagine finding out your friend is hospitalized through Instagram. It would be pretty shocking, right? That's exactly what happened to a lot of Kate Beckinsale's friends, after the 45-year-old actress posted about her recent stay in the hospital.
Beckinsale posted an image of herself with mascara-stained tears, laying in a hospital, and explained what happened in her caption.
"Turns out a ruptured ovarian cyst really hurts and morphine makes me cry," Beckinsale wrote. "So thankful to everyone who looked after me."
One fan asked when Beckinsale would choose to take a selfie while in immense pain, but the star decided to set the record straight, saying it was actually because of the paparazzi that she decided to post the picture.
It's actually not a selfie. My mum took it. I would not have posted it if we had not noticed someone in a car taking a photo of me leaving the hospital in a wheelchair.I have Instagram largely to have my own honest narrative and not have to always be ambushed by stories that come out that are invented. I'd prefer to say what happened than endure speculation and so I chose to share.
I agree, it's not a normal impulse. But it's not normal to be photographed in vulnerable situations by people you don't know either.
Thank you so much to everyone who has wished me well and lots of love to the girls here who have been through similar or worse. Love to all x.
Just like the rest of us when we found out about Beckinsale's hospitalization, a lot of her famous friends were shocked as well. Many took to the comments section of the post to find out what was wrong.
"Are you okay? Sending you so much love," Isla Fisher, one of Beckinsale's very close friends, commented.
David Spade simply wrote "WTF."
"Ohhhh noooo! So sorry, Kate! Sending you healing wishes!" Kevin Nealson wrote.
"On a hospital bed you are better looking than me on my wedding day. Feel better soon!!!" comedian Iliza Schlesinger wrote.
"OMG!!!!" Sarah Silverman said. Silverman dated Beckinsale's ex, Michael Sheen, and the two women became good friends.
Courtney Love, Rose McGowan, Lindsey Vonn and singer Natalie Imbruglia also shared heartfelt messages.
Ruptured ovarian cysts are extremely painful, and we can't imagine how uncomfortable Beckinsale must be right now. Hopefully this doesn't happen again, because no one should have to deal with that kind of pain! Also, it's too bad that the paparazzi had to invade her privacy like that. This whole situation could have been dealt with privately, but now it's out in the open.
