After two months of motherhood, Jordin Sparks is finally revealing the intimate details of the birth of her newborn son.
The American Idol winner welcomed her son Dana Isaiah Jr. (nicknamed DJ) into the world on May 5 and can't stop gushing about him.
"I'm a mom. That's so nuts," Sparks said in an interview PEOPLE. "I have moments where it just hits me."
In 2017, Sparks and her husband Dana Isaiah took the public by surprise when they announced they secretly wed earlier that year.
The "No Air" singer, who was previously linked to fellow musician, Jason Derulo, said she fell for her model beau right away.
"A couple days after we had actually met, I was like in my head 'That's going to be my husband! That's my husband right there,'" Sparks shared at the time. "When I'm with him, I feel comfort and safety and calm and peace, and those aren't things that I normally felt. So it was a little wake-up call for me."
Sparks was right on the mark about that, and said he had been her pillar of strength during her labor.
"He was right by me the whole time," Sparks explained. "When I was going to different places and different universes with the contractions, he was right there in my ear or rubbing my back."
Like plenty of other expecting mothers, Sparks decided to forgo a traditional birth at the hospital and have a natural one at a birth center instead, tub in all.
"Hospitals just felt a little weird and strange [to me]," the new mom said. "I had a feeling I wasn't going to be comfortable on my back and I didn't want to have to give birth that way."
"I finished out the contractions on the bed and then we went to the tub. When it was time to push, Dana received him," she added.
"People have told me 'Once you see your wife like that you can never change the image in your head,' but I was so excited about him actually coming that I was just like "˜All right, come on! Come on!'" Isaiah chimed in.
However, DJ's birth didn't go as smoothly as planned. When the two-month-old was born, his umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck twice. Luckily the scary situation was quickly taken care of.
"I didn't see it because I was facing the other way," Sparks explained. She also said her concerned husband had said he didn't "know what to do."
"He said it almost looked like a scarf "” it was wrapped around his neck and bod," Sparks said, adding that the midwife "got [the umbilical cord] off really quickly" when her husband was holding their son.
"Then he was good to go," she added. ""˜[He] took his first breath and then [Isaiah] handed him to me."
According to Isaiah, once they saw their bundle of joy for their first time, the happy couple "cried like little babies."
He said: "It was just that realizing moment, that everything you had been preparing for was here in your hands. Every emotion that you felt throughout the entire pregnancy from start to beginning just 'Bam,' and it hits you."
"He's starting to develop his own personality and holding his head up already," the proud dad added.
