Millions of us grew up reaching for Jimmy Dean sausages over the breakfast table, but the company just announced a nation-wide recall that should make you look twice.

Recalls on meat and vegetables have been big news this year. Most recently a continent-wide warning about Romaine lettuce has made global news. Millions of tons of food is being discarded over fears about bacteria, contamination or other worries.

Last week, another 5 million pounds of ground beef was recalled after more salmonella illnesses were reported.

On one hand, it's good that we're more able to identify problems and communicate with the public better than ever. On the other hand, it's scary to see this many problems in our food distribution system.

Jimmy Dean joins the list of big companies that have issued large recalls. They announced on Monday that they'll be recalling over 29,000 pounds of frozen, ready-to-eat pork and poultry sausage links.

There have apparently been several complaints to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service, centered around metal inside the sausage.

Thankfully no injuries have been reported, but there were enough complaints to warrant the recall.

A USDA press release states the following products are subject to the recall:

23.4-oz pouches of Jimmy Dean HEAT 'n SERVE Original Sausage Links Made with Pork & Turkey with a use by date of Jan 31, 2019. Case Code: A6382168 with a time stamp range of 11:58 through 01:49.

The department urges consumers to throw away the product, or return it to the place of purchase. Anyone who suspects that they've ingested metal from the sausages should consult a healthcare provider.
