Two weeks after her 30th birthday, Jim Carrey's ex-girlfriend Cathriona White took her own life. Carrey and White had broken up after she told the actor she tested positive for herpes.
White overdosed on a mixture of sleeping pills, heart medication, and pain relievers. Carrey was interviewed in the months following her death, after police found a note addressed to the famous actor, but it was ultimately ruled a suicide and Carrey was left alone to grieve.
Carrey remained close with White's family after her death, and was even a pallbearer at her funeral.
Things got ugly, however, after it was uncovered that White had married another man while she and Carrey had split. Mark Burton, White's husband, filed a lawsuit against Carrey, saying he gave her one of the medications she used to overdose, despite her history with depression and attempted suicide. White's mother also filed a lawsuit, saying Carrey is the one who gave her daughter herpes, and that's why she killed herself.
"Jim Carrey should be ashamed of what he did to my daughter," she wrote in her lawsuit. "As a family, we want the world to know the truth about who Jim Carrey really is."
Carrey didn't take these allegations lightly, however.
"I will not tolerate this heartless attempt to exploit me or the woman I loved," Carrey said in a statement.
He filed a counter-suit, saying White forged the STD test results in order to extort him for money.
"White's intent in obtaining these records was clear "” she cooked the records, creating forgeries with altered information, phony tests, and fictitious dates," according to the suit.
Now, more than two years after White's death, the bitter battle between Carrey and her family has come to an end.
According to TMZ, all the lawsuits between both parties have been dismissed.
Legal documents filed in Los Angeles indicate that both the suits filed by White's family and the counter-suit filed by Carrey himself have been dismissed with prejudice. This means that they are over for good, and neither parties can refile their suits.
Generally, when a suit is dismissed with prejudice, it means that a financial settlement has been reached between both parties. As of right now, no terms have been disclosed, but that seems bound to change.
