Cancer touches everyone, whether it's a family member, friend or beloved celebrity. 39.6% of men and women in the United States will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lifetime, according to the National Cancer Institute.
Many celebrities have come out and shared their battles with the disease including Julia Louis Dreyfus, Beth Chapman and Senator John McCain.
Now Grace and Frankie actress has revealed that she herself has had to battle cancer and have a growth removed.
The 80-year-old actress addressed the bandages she had on her lower lip while promoting the fourth season of the her Netflix series in New York City.
"I just want to explain the bandage. I just had a cancer taken from my lip," Fonda said. "I thought it was going to heal in time before I came before you, but it's fine. I just want to explain it. I don't normally go around like this," she continued.
She then took to Instagram with a photo of the Grace and Frankie duo.
"With Lily in NY. I've found a clever way to disguise my lip bandages from removal of cancer," the star captioned the picture.
That same day, she discussed her cancer diagnosis with Howard Stern in an interview.
The Hollywood legend was wearing a bandage on her lower lip when promoting her work in New York City.
"Hey listen, the world is falling apart, what's a lip," she joked, adding that her doctor "dug into" her lip to remove the cancer. "Yeah, they did [biopsy it.] I'm going to be fine, thanks."
This is not the first time the two-time Oscar winner had a brush with cancer though. In 2010, she had a small tumor from her breast removed during a routine checkup.
After her breast cancer diagnosis, Fonda did some soul searching and came to realize that she didn't feel any different about life than she did before the scare.
"[It] was a good test, because I always said I'm not afraid of dying," she told Oprah Winfrey in April 2013. "And I wasn't. I mean, I felt I've just joined a family of millions of women who have gone through this. And how interesting. What a journey this is going to be."
Adding, "[I thought], you know, maybe I'll make it and maybe I won't. I didn't get scared. I hope I don't die. But I'm not scared of dying."
She also revealed that she has suffered from bulimia and osteoarthritis. When discussing her recovery from bulimia, she said "It was in my 40s, and if you suffer from bulimia, the older you get, the worse it gets. It takes longer to recover from a bout... I had a career, I was winning awards, I was supporting nonprofits, I had a family. I had to make a choice: I live or I die."
Season 4 of Grace and Frankie debuts on January 19.
