1995 was a very memorable year for those of us who were around in the 90s. Not only was the public granted access to the World Wide Web for the first time, but Alanis Morissette gifted the world with her third album and international debut, Jagged Little Pill. A phenomenal record that altered the face of a genre forever.
The Canadian singer-songwriter cemented her legacy as grunge rock queen after topping the charts, selling millions of copies and sweeping up five Grammy Awards including Album of the Year and Best Rock Album for her U.S debut album.
Morissette's critically acclaimed album produced plenty of smash hits including You Oughta Know, Ironic and Hand In My Pocket, all of which continue to stand the test of time.
22 years after the iconic record's debut, Jagged Little Pill is making a comeback in a very special and exciting way.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jagged Little Pill will be making its way to the Broadway stage as a musical.
Morissette is set to be working with very recognizable names including director Diane Paulus (Waitress), Tom Kitt (Next to Normal) and screenwriter Diablo Cody, who is tasked with writing the musical book.
"This team that has come together for this Jagged Little Pill musical is my musical theater dream come true," Morissette said in a statement. "The chemistry between all of us is crackling and I feel honored to be diving into these songs again, surrounded by all of this searing talent. Diablo and Diane are already taking these deeply personal songs that are part of my soul's marrow to a whole other level of hope, freedom, and complexity."
As far as storyline goes, the show will reportedly explore issues of gender and race within a modern, multi-generational family. Of course songs from the influential album will be part of the musical and so will other tunes from Morissette's extensive catalogue.
"I am so excited to tell a modern story through these iconic songs. Alanis's music is full of powerful narratives that lend themselves organically to this process," said Cody. Paulus added, "Jagged Little Pill defined a generation and yet the raw, emotional honesty of Alanis' songs feels more needed now than ever."
The musical is scheduled to make its debut in May 2018 at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
