Let me start off by saying to each their own. As long as you're not breaking any laws or hurting anyone, people should be allowed to do whatever they want.
That being said, some things are just weird. Take, for example, Hilary Duff's latest admission. The Younger actress recently gave birth to her second child, a daughter named Banks, and revealed that she DRANK HER PLACENTA IN A SMOOTHIE. Yes. You read that right.
Duff was on the podcast Dr. Berlin's Informed Pregnancy where she talked about adding berries, and fruit juice to frozen placenta cubes, blending them all together to make a smoothie. Apparently, she was a big fan.
"[It was the] most delightful smoothie I've ever had...I haven't had a smoothie that delightful since I was like 10 years old," the Sparks singer said. "It was calorie-filled with juice and fruit and everything delicious."
Now let's make something clear: I really love Hilary Duff, and I rarely question her decisions. But this one just seems strange. I've heard of people popping placenta pills, but never drinking it. Duff said she had a good reason for going this direction, though.
"I heard something weird about pills," she explained. "I heard placenta burps are not ideal."
Yep, that's a good reason to avoid placenta pills if I've ever heard one. You've gotta feel for Duff's boyfriend Matthew Koma, and her six-year-old son Luca, who have both come across the frozen placenta cubes in the freezer. Luca asked his mom what they were, and his response was fitting.
"I wish I hadn't have asked," he replied.
Duff says that both Luca and Koma are extremely careful when they reach in the freezer now. The new mom also recounted the beautiful moment when she got to hold her little girl for the first time. Duff seemed to imply that it was a home birth, saying "[Banks] joined our world at home on Thursday afternoon and is absolute magic."
"They hand her to me and I'm looking at her...babies are like floppy little worms. They just don't have any control," Duff explained. "She reaches up both of her arms and like curls into me...reaches up her arms right at my neck like as to give me a hug. I couldn't believe how strong she was. It was so clearly like a hug...it was amazing."
The evidence behind ingesting your placenta after birth is pretty limited, with most doctors saying there's really only anecdotal proof that it affects new moms.
"We found that there is no scientific evidence of any clinical benefit of placentophagy [eating the placenta] among humans, and no placental nutrients and hormones are retained in sufficient amounts after placenta encapsulation to be potentially helpful to the mother postpartum," a report in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology said.
Either way, it sounds like Duff is happy and that's all that matter. Congratulations on the newest little addition to your family! Here's hoping Koma and Luca don't accidentally grab the wrong ice cube tray for their morning orange juice...
