City Bans Peanut Butter Kisses On Halloween - "No One Likes Them"

Which candy did you dread getting in your trick-or-treat bag as a child?

Candy corn? Circus peanuts? Or maybe an unconventional "treat" like a toothbrush?

For many, the most hated Halloween candy of all are the chewy Peanut Butter Kisses, which are known for their waxy orange and black wrappers.

(While they're sometimes called Mary Janes, those are actually a different, equally-controversial molasses candy.)

A debate over these candies is tearing a North Carolina city apart.Candy Warehouse

This year, one city in North Carolina has taken its spite for the peanut butter candy to the next level, as these treats are officially (unofficially) banned on Halloween.

"No one likes them."

The Facebook page for High Point, North Carolina's city government caused quite a stir when they warned residents that Peanut Butter Kisses had been "banned."

"Alright everybody, we're giving you a one-week notice as you prepare for trick-or-treaters to remind y'all that by order of the City of High Point Emperor of Acceptable Candy (it's a real thing), these are banned," the post read.

"No one likes them, don't give them out."

And it's true that these chewy treats are very divisive.

When Candy Store.com drew up a list of America's most-hated Halloween candy (based on other lists by popular outlets) Peanut Butter Kisses had a strong showing in fifth place.

A blog post on Halloween Love.com even called them "Halloween's Most Hated Candy."

But a surprising number of fans stood up for the illicit treat on High Point's Facebook page.

"I love peanut butter kisses they're so good," one wrote.

"They have been a favorite since they came out with them," said another. "I'm pretty sure they are gluten free too [and] if they are [a lot] of celiac people like them too."

Some fans say the Kisses are actually their favorite candies.Candyland

Some people also took issue with the city's "ban," and criticized High Point's "Emperor of Acceptable Candy" for passing it.

"There seems to be a little confusion from some of our out of town friends," another post later clarified, "this.is.clearly.a.joke. We're just saying maybe you won't be the most popular house on the street if you hand these out."

Surprisingly, candy experts suggest we might just be eating Peanut Butter Kisses all wrong. Instead of popping them straight into your mouth, warming them in your hands first can make these candies gooey instead of chewy.

And in any case, they'll never be America's most hated Halloween candy. On Candy Store.com's list, they still trailed behind unpopular treats like circus peanuts, candy corn, wax cola bottles, and Necco Wafers.

While some people actually like candy corn, most states prefer treats like Snickers, Twix, Milky Way, and Three Musketeers in their Halloween bags.
