June is off to a delicious start! This year, the first day of the month happens to coincide with National Donut Day.

The holiday, which is annually celebrated on the first Friday of June, is not only special because it's an excuse to enjoy a free treat, but because of its history.

National Donut Day was started by the Salvation Army in Chicago in 1938 to honor their members who served the treat to soldiers during the First World War.

Today, many of our favorite restaurants, retailers, and bakeries are giving us a chance to indulge in a donut or two for free to celebrate the special day.

Here are all the spots you can get a free donut:

Krispy Kreme

The international chain gives away free doughnuts a few times a year, and today is no exception. Visit a location near to and receive any doughnut on the menu on the house, no purchase necessary.

Dunkin' Donuts

If you're up for a donut crawl, you can also stop by Dunkin' Donuts for a free classic donut of your choice when you purchase a beverage.

You'll have to choice between Glazed, Boston Kreme, Glazed Chocolate, and Strawberry Frosted with Sprinkles.

Walmart

Even if you didn't have plans to shop at Walmart, just swing by your nearest store's bakery section to get your complimentary whole glazed donut, while supplies last.

Since store hours may vary, be sure to double check them before you head out.

Duck Donuts

Customers can choose a free donut from the following flavors: bare, cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar. On top of the freebie, Duck Donuts will be giving out exclusive National Donut Day "Buy One, Get One Free," coupons, which are redeemable until June 17.

The chain will also be treating our brave service men and women by delivering free treats to police and fire stations. They'll also drop some off to the Salvation Army, schools, and local businesses.

LaMar's Donuts

This golden ticket is all you need to show to get a free donut at LaMar's Donuts. The offer doesn't include items from their specialty menu, but who's complaining?

Honey Dew

The New England-based donut and coffee chain is giving away free S'Mores donuts with a purchase of a medium beverage.

Fractured Prune

According to Money, you can enjoy a free OC Sand Doughnut, which is honey glazed and covered in cinnamon and sugar.

Factory Donuts

The Philadelphia-based shop is extra generous today, and will give every customer two free donuts.

Martin's

If you're in Indiana or Michigan, Martin's has an offer for a free donut you won't be able to resist.

Duffy's Sports Grill

Dine at Duffy's (minimum purchase of two meals) and get a free basket of red velvet mini donuts for the table.

Edible Arrangements

The popular chain recently introduced new Edible Donuts made with granny smith apples. They're available in a variety of toppings, including chocolate. You can try it for free today, then from June 2-6, enjoy it with the purchase of a combo.

Doughnut Plant

In the New York City area? Head over to the new Doughnut Plant to receive a free mini donut with a purchase.

Bonus: Papa John's

Yes, it's a pizza place, and yes, they're going to be adding donut holes to their menu. If you'd like to try it ahead of the official launch, you can get a free taste with your online pizza purchase.
