The entertainment industry has lost another one of its greats this week. John Mahoney, best known for his role on the hit sitcom Frasier, has passed away on Sunday, February 4 at a Chicago hospice, according to his publicist.
The actor, who portrayed retired police officer Martin Crane, Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) and Niles's (David Hyde Pierce) father, on the 90s show, was 77 years old.
For his role in the iconic show, he won a Screen Actors Guild Award in 2000, and was in the running for two Emmy and Golden Globe Awards. He had previously won a Tony Award for his theatrical work in 1986.
In recent years, Mahoney had a recurring role on Hot in Cleveland. He played the role of Roy, the love interest of Betty White's character, Elka, from 2011 to 2014. His last television appearance was in Foyle's War in 2015.
Mahoney's career spanned over three decades, and his filmography includes appearances in classics like The American President. He had stints on Cheers as well as 3rd Rock from the Sun, and he also did some voice work for the animated films Antz and Atlantis.
The British-born actor's love for the craft started way back when he lived in the U.K, but he wouldn't pursue it as a career until later in life. He moved to the United States in the 50s, and taught English at Western Illinois University for a while before taking up acting in the 70s.
The notoriously private star has claimed to have been in many relationships, but he has never been married, and had no children. He spent much of life living in Oak Park, Illinois.
At this time, it's unclear whether Mahoney was ill or died of natural causes.
He will surely be missed. May he rest in peace.
