It's one of the most annoying things that can happen to you. It seems to happen without warning and nothing makes it go away except for time. What are we talking about? Eye twitching of course!
Having your eyelid start to twitch out of nowhere is so annoying. You have no idea why it happens, it doesn't seem to stop no matter what you do, and worst of all, it feels like everyone can see it happening.
But why is it happening? Well, good news is, almost all of the reasons why your eyelid twitches are completely benign and not usually a serious medical issue. However, it's incredibly frustrating and if you want it to stop, it'll help to know why it's happening. Here are the most common causes.
1. Fatigue
The most common cause is a fairly obvious one. If you are incredibly tired, you may experience an increase in the frequency of eye twitches. Get some rest, and your eye may finally stop its annoying dance moves.
2. Dry Eyes
It you spend a lot of time staring at computers, then dry eyes are something that you will be very familiar with. It's not the only reason why dry eyes may be an issue for you, it can also be caused by wearing contacts or taking medications that can have dry eyes as a side effect. Whatever the reason why your eyes have become dry, you can often use eye drops to help hydrate the surface of your eye and it might help with your persistent twitch.
3. Caffeine
Sure, drinking coffee is obviously a requirement, but unfortunately, it can lead to an eye twitch that will drive you crazy. Caffeine, which is found in coffee, tea, soft drinks, and even chocolate, can trigger the eyelid to start twitching. If you want it to stop, you may need to cut back on the coffee and get your energy the old fashioned way, sleep!
4. Smoking
There are a lot of symptoms that happen to those who smoke, and eye twitching is one of them. Nicotine can increase the frequency of eye twitches, and having smoke right in your face doesn't help either.
5. Stress
Stress affects you in a lot of ways. It can make you sleep less, it can cause digestive issues, and it can even cause hair loss. Another way that it can hurt your body is by frustrating you with an eye twitch. Because you are sleeping less, and because your body is in a heightened state of tension, your eye may start to twitch uncontrollably. Take time to relax if you are finding the twitch is appearing more frequently, doing the things you love to do.
6. Vitamin Deficiency
If you are experiencing chronic eye twitches, then you may want to check out your diet. You may be lacking some of the most important nutrients that you need to keep your body working. While the eye twitch itself isn't necessarily dangerous, it can be trying to warn you about something more in your body. Ask your doctor how to find out if you have any deficiencies to worry about.
7. Eye Strain
It could be as simple as your eyes trying to tell you that it's time to head to the eye doctor. Your eyes may be having a hard time focusing on things because you need a new glasses prescription, so you should make an appointment and see if it's as simple as that.
8. Allergies
Swelling caused by allergies can make you feel like you have to rub your eyes, but when you do it releases histamines which lead to your eye twitching. Try using antihistamine eye drops if it's caused by allergies, but check with your doctor first.
No matter what the cause is, if it is persistent and bothering you, check with your doctor to make sure everything is okay.
