After 10 years together, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth called off their relationship. The couple was married for less than a year before deciding to call it quits.
“Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time,” a rep for Cyrus told PEOPLE in a statement earlier this year. “Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers. They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy.”
Since then, Cyrus has been very open about her relationship with another Australian hottie, Cody Simpson.
“They walked in holding hands and looked around a bit, but then started to get pretty comfortable and were not shy about showing their affection towards each other at all,” the eyewitness told Us. “They were both standing at first, flirting and kissing. Then they came and sat down. Miley got up and sat on Cody’s lap and started making out with him. [Cody's] name was called at the counter, and he grabbed his smoothie bowl, and they left together holding hands.”
As for Hemsworth, he's been quietly seeing actress Maddison Brown, but is definitely more private about it than Cyrus is with her relationships.
“It’s very new,” a source close to the Hemsworth previously told PEOPLE. “Liam is taking it slow, but he’s definitely interested in her.”
It seemed like things were going to be pretty civil, but comments made by Elsa Pataky, Hemsworth's sister-in-law, might change that. Pataky, an actress and model, is married to Liam's older brother Chris, and she says that Liam could do better.
“My brother-in-law, well… After a relationship that you've dedicated ten years to, he's a little bit down, but he's coping well," she said. "He’s a strong boy, and he deserves the best, I think he deserves much better. You always find support in your family, and he's joined at the hip with his brother, who has been there to give all the strength he needed. Family is always there to protect you. He and his brother are so close and he’s really been there for him. The truth is he is a doll, I adore him and he’s so handsome. I gotta say it."
It's strange, because Cyrus and Pataky seemed close while she and Liam were together, even spending the holidays together and going out to parties. They were both linked to the Hemsworth family around the same time—Pataky and her Hemsworth were married in 2010, while Cyrus and her Hemsworth met and started dating in 2009.
Cyrus hasn't responded to the comments made by her former sister-in-law, and it's not likely that she will, but it does make you wonder what the family really thought of Cyrus while she and Hemsworth were together.
