There are a lot of medical procedures that seem a little bizarre to people who aren't doctors, but this one is WAY out there. After Maria da Silva received second degree burns over a good portion of her body, the way the doctors treated it was completely unheard of.
When the doctors were treating her wounds, they offers to wrap her in the skin of the tilapia fish. That's right, covered in fish scales.
Her arms and affected leg were wrapped in the fish skin and then covered in gauze while it attached to her skin. The reason they did this was because the fish skin contains a high level of collagen and high degrees of humidity so it would help speed up the healing process and help her get healthy faster.
Eventually as the skin started to heal underneath the layer of fish skin could be pulled back.
She has become the first person to be treated in this method, but the positive outcome may lead to more doctors using this method to help burn victims.
