Demi Lovato's Mom Provides Update On Star Following Overdose

In July of this year, Demi Lovato overdosed after six years of sobriety. There are many reports as to what Lovato overdosed on, but nothing has actually been confirmed. In the past, the Confident singer has spoken openly about her struggles with cocaine.

"Something I've never talked about before, but with my drug use I could hide it to where I would sneak drugs. I couldn't go without 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine and I would bring it on airplanes," Lovato said in 2013. "I would smuggle it basically and just wait until everyone in first class would go to sleep and I would do it right there. I'd sneak to the bathroom and I'd do it."

A month before her overdose, fans speculated that Lovato had in fact relapsed, after she released a revealing song called "Sober." The lyrics included "I'm not sober anymore. And daddy, please forgive me for the drinks spilled on the floor. To the ones who never left me, we've been down this road before. I'm so sorry, I'm not sober anymore."

After her overdose, Lovato was in serious condition at the hospital, with TMZ reporting the starlet was suffering from complications due to infection.

Once she was well enough, Lovato released a statement through her Instagram account, thanking her fans for all of their support.

But since that message, there has been radio silence from the former Disney star. This is to be expected, of course, seeing as she is focusing on her sobriety, but fans were still curious as to how treatment was going. Thankfully, Lovato's mom, Dianna De La Garza, provided an updated while on the Conversations with Maria Menounos podcast.

"She has 90 days and I couldn't be more thankful or more proud of her, because addiction, being a disease, it is work," De La Garza revealed. "It's very hard, it's not easy, and there are no shortcuts."

And although the worried mother says she "doesn't really know" what caused the relapse, she does have her own theories.

It can be any number of reasons. We lost five close members of our family in one year while I was writing the book, my grandfather, my grandmother, two uncles.

We lost five people just in a span of a few months.  My grandmother and my grandfather were older and they were in a nursing home, but my uncles, that was kind of a shock.

And then I lost a grandmother on my father's side and so even through all of that, losing all of those people, she didn't relapse. So, it's hard to say.

You couldn't say because we lost five people in our family that caused a relapse.

I don't think it was a particular incident.

I also think that when you're young and sometimes you think, maybe I can go do this and it won't affect me, but with an addiction you just can't do that. It's a slippery slope.

Lovato's younger sister, Madison De La Garza, also spoke recently about the Skyscraper singer's progress.

"She's working really hard on her sobriety, and we're all so incredibly proud of her," the younger De La Garza said. "It's been crazy for our family. It's been a lot."

And when her sister is well enough to leave treatment, the former Desperate Housewives actress said she's looking forward to doing "so many little things" with her big sis.

"It sounds so small, but [I want to] go to Menchie's," she said. "Honestly, I'm more of a Pinkberry person, but she likes Menchie's, and so we usually go there."

It seems like Lovato is in a better place than she has been in a while, and we just hope that she is able to keep up with her sobriety so she can live life to the fullest.
