After decades of waiting and years of speculation, fans of a classic "˜80s movie were treated to good news this week.
Paramount Pictures announced that Coming to America, the 1988 comedy starring Eddie Murphy, will finally get a sequel in 2020.
More than 30 years after the adventures of Murphy's character, Prince Akeem of Zamunda, in New York City, there's no telling what's in store for him in the sequel. But a return trip to a very different Big Apple is probably in the cards.
A recent script for the project, written by the original film's writers Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield but rewritten by Black-ish creator Kenya Barris, saw Akeem learning that he had a long-lost son in America, and grooming him to be the royal heir of Zamunda.
While Murphy is not officially named as the lead actor yet, he's expected to star based on the announcement - which lists him as a producer.
The original film, which grossed over $300 million, saw Akeem traveling to New York in search of love after escaping an arranged marriage. It also featured Murphy under makeup as several other characters, including Clarence the barber and Saul, his crusty client.
Craig Brewer, who directed Hustle & Flow and the 2011 Footloose remake, is attached to direct the new movie.
Other stars of the original film, including John Amos and Arsenio Hall, have already hinted they were interested in returning for a sequel.
That means we could also learn if the McDowell's restaurant and its Golden Arcs from the original film have survived copyright claims from a certain other fast food joint.
The new sequel is set to be released on August 7, 2020.
