A person's final words have been a subject of fascination for centuries.
Some believe these words are tied to the afterlife, while others believe it simply evokes a lot of meaning and insight into the individual.
Whatever the reason, once you know someone's last words, it will forever be entrenched in your memory.
Here are 20 beloved celebrities who have the most poignant final words before they died.
1. David Bowie
After a long battle with liver cancer, the singer-songwriter died early 2016 at the age of 69.
He had just released his album, Blackstar at the time, and continued to attend his music rehearsals, despite his illness.
According to his long time friend Gary Oldman, David's final words were: "[Music] has been my doorway of perception and the house that I live in."
Gary remembers his final conversation with the late singer very clearly, where David talked about how grateful he was for being able to follow his passion for 40 years.
"I can't say that life's pains or more tragic episodes have been diminished because of it, but it has allowed me so many moments of companionship when I have been lonely and sublime means of communications when I have wanted to touch people," Gary recalled David saying.
2. Walt Disney
The world's most famous animator died of lung cancer in 1966 at the age of 65. Before he died, Walt wrote his final words on a slip of paper: "Kurt Russell."
The man who was in charge of documenting everything in Walt's office at the time found the note on his desk in 1970.
His final words are still quite shocking to many, and no one really knows why he wrote the actor's name. Russell, who was 15 at the time, also had no clue why.
That being said, some people think Walt had plans to include Russell in one of his productions.
3. Amelia Earhart
Whether Amelia Earhart's body has been found is still a mystery, but her final words before she vanished somewhere in the ocean is not.
The famous female aviator final words are still resonating in the hearts of women today:
"Please know that I am quite aware of the hazards. Women must try to do things as men have tried. When they fail, their failure must be but a challenge to others."
She wrote those final words in a letter to her husband before she disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean, near Howland Island.
4. Freddie Mercury
This photo above is one of the last taken of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. A day before the music legend died in 1991 from bronchopneumonia, he admitted that he contracted AIDS.
According to Freddie's personal assistant, Peter Freestone, the singer was too weak to leave his home, but continued work on his music.
On the day of his death, Freddie told Freestone: "I will have no more drugs that will keep me alive now." And right before he stopped breathing, Mercury said, "Thank you."
5. Paul Walker
Paul Walker and his friend, Roger Rodas, left a typhoon charity event with the intention of coming back. Before Walker left, he told an engineer at the event: "We will be back in five minutes."
Unfortunately, Walker crashed the Porsche he was in into a concrete lamppost claiming his and his friend's life.
It's believed that the Fast & Furious star wanted to take the display car out for a "quick spin."
These next final words are simply heartbreaking...
6. Robin Williams
America's beloved comedian and actor committed suicide at the age of 63. The world mourned his loss, and soon learned that Robin suffered a form of dementia that disabled him from leading a normal life.
One of his final words were written on Instagram, addressed to his daughter, Zelda: "#tbt and Happy Birthday to Ms. Zelda Rae Williams! Quarter of a century old today but always my baby girl. Happy Birthday [at Zelda Williams] Love you!"
It wasn't until three years later that his wife, Susan Schneider, opened up about Robin's illness and his final words to her.
"I was getting in bed and he came in the room a couple of times and he said, "˜Goodnight, my love,'" Susan recalled. "And then, he came back again. He came out with his iPad, and he looked like he had something to do. And that was like, "˜I think he's getting better.' And then he said "˜goodnight, goodnight.' That was the last."
7. Stephen Hawking
World-renowned theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking died at his home at the age of 76 in March 2018.
Hawking was diagnosed with ALS at the age of 21, and spent decades confined to a wheelchair. Yet, he still managed to change the world with mind.
In his last broadcast interview with BBC News, Hawking said, "Gold is rare everywhere, not just on Earth. The reason it's rare is that by nuclear-binding energy peaks at iron, making it hard to produce heavier elements in general."
8. Amy Winehouse
British singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse was found dead in her London apartment at the age of 27.
The pop singer had quite a bad reputation for being addicted to drugs and alcohol. The day she died, Winehouse consumed 5 times the amount of alcohol needed to kill a person.
She was on the phone with her doctor two hours before her heart stopped, when she told him "I don't want to die."
9. Bob Marley
The reggae legend, known for hits like "One Love" and "Could You Be Loved," died from cancer in 1977.
Bob was diagnosed with malignant melanoma, and refused to get treated for it. Over the years, the cancer that started under his toenail spread to his lungs and brain.
On his deathbed, the humble singer told his son, Ziggy, something he'll never forget: "Money can't buy life."
10. John Lennon
The Beatles legend was close to his New York City home when Mark David Chapman, a crazed fan, shot four bullets into his back. Chapman first met John four hours before the tragic incident, receiving a signature from his favorite music artist.
The musician's final words were to the receptionist of the building he entered: "I'm shot."
His wife, Yoko Ono, later opened up to BBC Radio about John's final words to her: "I said "˜shall we go and have dinner before we go home?' and John said "˜No, let's go home because I want to see Sean before he goes to sleep.'"
11. Steve Jobs
The co-founder of Apple, Steve Jobs, died at the age of 56 from pancreatic cancer.
He was surrounded by his loved ones at his home in Palo Alto, California when he stopped breathing.
His sister described his final words as "monosyllables, repeated three times."
Steve said, "OH WOW. OH WOW. OH WOW" before he lost consciousness.
12. Whitney Houston
There isn't anyone that doesn't get goosebumps when listening to Whitney Houston, and her final words will also tickle the hairs on your body.
Whitney was found unconscious in a hotel room's bathtub at the age of 48. Her final words words were, "I'm gonna go see Jesus, want to see Jesus."
In her final days, friends recalled Whitney wanting to see the biblical figure. According to TMZ, she also told friends she felt like her end was near.
What's even more peculiar is that the evening before she died, Whitney performed a version of "Jesus Loves Me" at the Tru nightclub in Hollywood.
13. Michael Jackson
The King of Pop died of cardiac arrest, believed to have been from a drug overdose, in 2009 at the age of 50.
According to his personal doctor, Conrad Murray, Michael was begging for milk while lying on his bed.
"He was pleading and begging to please please let him have some milk because that was the only thing that would work," the disgraced doctor said.
Michael's final words were, "More milk."
14. Heath Ledger
According to the actor's sister, Katie, Heath's final words were, "Katie, Katie, look...it'll be fine, you know, I just need to get some sleep."
Heath was on the phone with his sister telling her he was going to be fine if he took sleeping pills with the medication he was prescribed for his chest cold.
He was later found unconscious in his bed by his housekeeper. Heath was only 28 years old when he died.
15. Chris Farley
The beloved comedian and actor died of accidental drug overdose in late 1997 at the age of 33. He was attending a party with a hooker named Heidi, where they were smoking crack and snorting cocaine.
When Chris collapsed, he said his final words to the woman he was with: "Don't leave me."
His passing shocked fans and close friends, to the extent that his best friend David Spade couldn't even attend his funeral.

16. Kurt Cobain
Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain committed suicide in 1994 at the age of 27. His death was tragic, but it wasn't shocking.
Kurt was well-known for being depressed and experimenting with hard drugs like heroin. He slipped into an overdose-induced coma a few months before he shot himself at his home in Lake Washington.
The musician left a suicide note addressed to his imaginary childhood friend "Boddah," in whcih he wrote about his mental state, music, and family.
He concluded his final message to the world by saying this: "I don't have the passion anymore, and so remember, it's better to burn out then to fade away."
17. Elvis Presley
In the photo above, the King of Rock 'n' Roll arrived late at night at his house after a dentist appointment. Early next morning, Elvis died from a heart attack at the age of 42.
According to his fiancee, Ginger Alden, his final words were, "I'm going to the bathroom to read."
He spoke those final words when he had trouble sleeping, and left the bedroom to not further disturb Ginger. A couple hours later, she noticed Elvis was still gone.
"I didn't want to think he was dead. God wouldn't want to take him so soon," she recalled of that tragic day.
18. Hugh Hefner
The founder of Playboy died from an infection at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 91.
Hugh was suffering from severe back problems for years, but his conditioned worsened when he contracted a bug that infected his body. He was bedridden for two weeks, until he succumbed to his illness.
In his final interview before his death, Hugh told People magazine, "It's nice to look back on very sweet moments. I just think I'm very, very blessed."
19. Marvin Gaye
Moments before Marvin's father shot him twice at point-blank range, the singer said, "Mother, I'm going to get my things and get out of this house. Father hates me and I'm never coming back."
Marvin was only 44 years old when he died in 1984. Days before his death, Marvin's parents argued over a misplaced insurance policy letter.
On the day of his death, the singer was fed up with how his father was treating and yelling at his mother that Marvin started "kicking him brutally."
"I was standing about eight feet away from Marvin, when my husband came to the door of the bedroom with his pistol. My husband didn't say anything, he just pointed the gun at Marvin. I screamed but it was very quick," Marvin's mother recalled of that tragic day.
20. Frank Sinatra
The beloved singer died of a heart attack at the age of 82 in 1998. His wife, Nancy, was by his side when his heart stopped beating.
Frank's health deteriorated the more that he aged. He was frequently hospitalized for high blood pressure, pneumonia, bladder cancer, and heart and respiratory problems.
While Nancy encouraged him to fight, he knew he couldn't. She remembers her husband's final words very clearly. Frank told her, "I'm losing."
