No matter how long celebrity couples have been together, it seems like relationships in Hollywood never last. While many stars try to end relationships amicably, there have been times when things took a turn for the ugly from the get-go.

Some celebrities tried to make things impersonal by avoiding the breakup conversation with their significant others, and instead broke the news via text, voicemail and even on television.

Here are 13 celebrities who got dumped in the most cold and heartbreaking ways:

1. Minnie Driver and Matt Damon

It might be a good idea to tell the person you were dating that you no longer want a relationship before telling it to the rest of the world, but that's not how it went down between Minnie Driver and her Good Will Hunting co-star Matt Damon.

Damon publicly announced that he was single during an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, and that's how Driver learned that they were over.

"It's unfortunate that Matt went on Oprah; it seemed like a good forum for him to announce to the world that we were no longer together, which I found fantastically inappropriate," Driver told the Los Angeles Times in 1998.

2. Mary-Louise Parker and Billy Crudup

The Weeds actress was seven months pregnant with her first child when her boyfriend of seven years, actor Billy Crudup, walked out on her out of the blue in 2003. He left her for fellow actress Claire Danes, who was 24 at the time.

"I am alone. Look, see? I am pregnant and alone. It hurts to even breathe," Parker wrote in her memoir Dear Mr. You.

Parker gave birth to a son, William, a few months later in 2004, and has raised him as a single mother ever since.

3. Eva Longoria and Tony Parker

The Desperate Housewives star found hundreds of text messages between her husband, Tony Parker, and his NBA teammate's wife. That's how she came to learn that he no longer wanted to be with her, which eventually led her to file for divorce.

Longoria admitted in an interview with Piers Morgan that the split was "heartbreaking," then added: "I had such an identity in being Mrs Parker and when that's taken away from you it's hard."

4. Katy Perry and Russell Brand

Singer Katy Perry and comedian Russell Brand had a whirlwind of a romance that led to the pair getting married in 2010. After 14 months of marriage, Brand revealed that they were getting a divorce, but he did a better job breaking the news to the public than he did with his ex-wife.

According to Perry, Brand sent her text message on New Year's Eve informing her that he had filed for divorce.

"He's a very smart man, and I was in love with him when I married him. Let's just say I haven't heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011," explained Perry.

5. Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer

It seems like ending a relationship through text is common practice in Hollywood. Friends star Jennifer Aniston thought things were going well between her and John Mayer, but she thought wrong. Mayer sent her text message announcing the end of their fling.

6. Britney Spears and Kevin Federline

The couple's soap opera marriage came to a dramatic end when Spears texted Federline to let him know that she filed for divorce. The dancer received the text while he was filming a segment for Canada's MuchMusic to promote his rap career.

7. Taylor Swift and Joe Jonas

Taylor Swift was just 18 when she dated Joe Jonas of Jonas Brothers fame, but their young romance didn't end well. When Jonas was ready to literally call it quits, he left Swift a voicemail. It lasted for 27 seconds, according to the "Bad Blood" singer.

8. Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries

The reality TV star and the NBA player's marriage only lasted for 72 days before Kardashian filed for divorce. Unfortunately for Humphries, he found out about his wife's decision through TMZ first. Ouch.

9. Ariana Grande and Jai Brooks

Back in 2012, the singer was in a long-distance relationship with Australian YouTube star Jai Brooks. They finally met in New York City in December of that year, and remained a couple until the summer of 2013, when Brooks dumped her via text message.

That's not even the worst part.

"The worst way I've been broken up with would probably be over a text message the opening night of my tour right before I was about to go on stage," Grande told Complex in 2013.

10. Laura Dern and Billy Bob Thornton

Actress Laura Dern was away filming a movie when her boyfriend, Billy Bob Thornton, dumped her for another woman. In fact, it wasn't until she got back that she found out that the woman was her fellow actress Angelina Jolie and that they had gotten married.

"I left our home to go and make a movie and while I was away, my boyfriend got married and I never heard from him again," Dern explained.

11. Jordin Sparks and Jason Derulo

American Idol winner Jordin Sparks was blindsided when her boyfriend, singer Jason Derulo, just stopped all contact with her.

"He helped me with my bag to the car, he kissed me, he told me he loved me...then didn't call," she said.

He also never gave her an explanation as to why he wanted to break up, even after she contacted him to come get his stuff out of her house.

12. Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland

Julia Roberts earned the "runaway bride" title years before she starred in the 1999 romantic comedy of the same name. The actress and Kiefer Sutherland were days away from their 1991 nuptials when she ran away with his friend, Jason Patric, on the day of their intended wedding.

"We were both young, and we were both very much in love, we had decided that we wanted to get married, but then this other thing kind of took over," Sutherland said on The Jess Cagle Interview.

13. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes

The Mission Impossible actor had no idea he would be celebrating his 50th birthday as a single man. Days before the milestone birthday, he received divorce papers from Katie Holmes in the mail.
