Camille Grammer, Real Wife of Beverly Hills cast member and ex-wife of Frasier star Kelsey Grammer, revealed that she has been diagnosed with cancer for the second time.
In 2013, the former dancer and model received news no one ever wants to hear: she had Stage 2 Endometrial Cancer, which affects the uterus.
She underwent a radical hysterectomy, and went into remission soon after what was described as "a significant recuperation period."
Apparently, Camille had been at a higher risk because of genetic issues. Thankfully she had been "diligent about regular check-ups and monitoring, which explains the early detection and rapid treatment."
At the time, her rep told ABC News that Camille continues to urge "all women to be aware of genetic factors relating to women's cancers and get regular check-ups."
Camille spent the past few years spreading awareness about below-the-belt cancers, including endometrial and ovarian.
Four years since winning her fight against cancer, Camille has unfortunately been diagnosed with another form of cancer, and it was once again found below the belt.
She has recently opened up about the diagnosis in an interview with People magazine.
This week, the reality TV star revealed on Instagram that she had been diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC), which is reportedly the second most common form of skin cancer.
SCC usually develops after repeated exposure to ultraviolet over a lifetime. Signs of this type of skin cancer often appear as "scaly red patches or elevated growths."
"Cancer really stinks," Camille told People. "It's unfortunate it runs in my family. I was diagnosed with Lynch Syndrome 15 years ago, so I have a genetic disposition to cancer. My mom had it also and her mom and unfortunately, these cancers seem to come along with the territory."
The 49-year-old confirmed that she had "those pesky cancer cells" removed during a recent surgical procedure done by the at Cedars-Sinai hospital.
"My cancer was removed and I'm resting at home," she wrote in the caption of the Instagram photo. "Ladies listen to your bodies. If something doesn't seem right go for a checkup. Don't put it off. Annual check ups are important."
When asked if she knew how she might have gotten the cancer, Camille isn't too sure, but she thinks tanning beds may have been a contributing factor.
"I don't know how exactly I got it, but listen "” I used to go to tanning beds. As a teenager, those were so popular," Grammer said. "I'm not saying that's the cause, I don't know what the cause is. Some people think it's from the HPV, but my pap-smear came up negative for HPV. Again, there's no clear certain reason why this showed up in this case. But it's better to get checked."
Camille admitted that she was "a little embarrassed" to talk about the location of this new cancer, but she decided to do so anyway to "lift the veil of shame" and get a conversation started.
"I'm a spokesperson, and advocate of awareness," she explained. "So when anything comes up on our bodies "” if it's skin cancer or a bump or something we're not certain of "” we need to see our doctors...When they present, don't sweep them under the rug like so many of us do."
Camille has a shorter recovery period this time around. In two weeks, she should be healed enough to resume physical activity, but in the meantime, she has her fiance David C. Meyer by her side.
Meyer also has firsthand experience with cancer, and understands what Camille his going through. He recently had an SCC removed from his temple.
"We were both laughing about this," Camille said. "With sun exposure, be careful."
Camille also said that being an advocate for cancer awareness also helps in her recovery.
"Being a spokesperson for cancer awareness has been a passion of mine," Camille added. "It helps me in my recovery but also helps others. I'm very proud to be a part of this movement."
She'll be returning to Real Housewives for the show's premiere, and she's looking forward to using this opportunity to help educate people about cancer.
We wish her a speedy recovery!
