Supermodel Brooke Shields was just a teenager when she became one of the most famous people in the world.
Shields became embroiled in number of scandals throughout her career, the earliest dating back to when she was just 12 years old, making her big screen debut in the controversial Louis Malle film Pretty Baby (1978).
At 14, she appeared in a number of nude scenes in the film adaptation of Henry De Vere Stacpoole's novel "The Blue Lagoon," and at 15, she starred in a series of provocative Calvin Klein ads.
The model later revealed that she didn't see anything wrong with the print and video ads she did for the designer.
"The controversy [over saying "˜You wanna know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing.'] didn't surprise me because I'd had experience with it since I was 11," Shields admitted. "The pants came above my belly button"”even the one with my shirt open, you didn't see anything. Compared to the things I'd done before, this was like being in winter gear."
However, she is singing a different tune now that she's a parent. Shields and her husband, Chris Henchy, share two daughters,15-year-old Rowan Francis and 12-year-old Grier Hammond.
While Shields' own mother pushed her to pursue acting and modeling at a young age, she's taking a very different approach when it comes to her children.
In a 2017 interview with Social Life, Shields, a Princeton graduate, revealed that she has banned her children from modeling until after they complete college.
'It's a cutthroat and demoralizing business," she admitted. "Plus, they want you when they want you, and you have to be there for auditions and work, and my kids aren't missing school.'
She explained that the industry "has no loyalty whatsoever," and it's her education that has helped her stay in the game for so long. While she wants her girls to prioritize school, she still wants them to have fun, which is why she occasionally asks them to accompany her to special events.
Shields recently attended the 2018 Hamptons Grand Prix in Bridgehampton, New York, but all eyes were on her date: her daughter Grier.
The pre-teen wore a beautiful off-the-shoulder dress, while her 53-year-old mother opted for a black and white dress with a feather motif.
The pair posed for photos together and there's no denying that Grier takes after her famous mother in so many ways.
Shields has previously shared photos of her daughters on social media, but she makes sure that they remain largely out of the limelight by limiting their screen time.
"My daughter Rowan doesn't have any of her passwords. She has to ask me to log her in. She's so mad and embarrassed with her friends, but I'm tough like that," she told People in 2016. "It's the least that I can do, the rest is so hard," she said. "You don't want to overprotect them and then they have no armor "” so it's a balance."
Despite the tough love she gives them, Shields said that she and her girls share a great bond.
"My daughters have especially helped me feel confident," the model admitted. She also revealed that Rown and Grier enjoy raiding her closet and teaching her the Instagram ropes.
While the children of many of Shields' fellow models have chosen to follow in their parents' footsteps, it's unclear whether or not Rowan and Grier are interested in a career in the fashion world. Even if they are, they still have a few more years before their mother will give them her blessings.
For now, instead of the runway, we'll only be seeing Shields' daughters on the red carpet and on social media.
