As the debut season of The Launch draws to a close, it continues to prove that talent, persistence, and star power come in all shapes and sizes.
This week, Grammy award-winning artist and Culture Club frontman Boy George joined returning judges Scott Borchetta (executive producer, CEO of Big Machine Label Group) and Stephan Moccio (producer for Miley Cyrus, Celine Dion etc.) to find the perfect artist to launch the song "Giants."
While it was a tough search, they found that artist in one of the most unlikely people imaginable: a 13-year-old singer from Toronto, ON.
Ethan Young (with perhaps one of the most appropriate last names in music history) began his pursuit of a musical career at a very young age, and a 13 he's already attended schools for the arts and even performed as part of the Mini Pop Kids, who've played sold out shows across Ontario.
Despite his age, Ethan wowed the judges with a performance of "Rise Up" by Andra Day, which he said inspired him to get past being bullied for his passions. His soulful, soaring voice made him a shoe-in as a finalist to record "Giants," alongside fellow Torontonian Grace Bakker.
The two's performance styles could not have been more different, with Ethan aiming for a large, emotional pop sound for the song, while Grace's was much more stripped down and personal. Either one was a heavy contender for the winner, and both received some valuable advice about their individual styles and performances by fellow Canadian recording artist, Alessia Cara.
Both had their individual struggles with the song as well, with Grace making sure to keep her individuality (even sometimes against the thoughts of the judges) while Ethan had a difficult time keeping his live performance subdued and focused instead of rushing through his movements.
Of course, only one could be chosen to launch the song, and after both turned in stellar live performances, it was Ethan who was chosen to have his rendition of "Giants" released immediately. The judges were in awe of his chops, with Boy George commenting that "What I noticed about you performing was that when people really reacted to you, you were even better."
Ethan Young's debut single, "Giants," is now available for purchase everywhere. You can also follow him on Instagram and YouTube.
